Julian,

Don't know about the Anapod stuff, but for scientific comparisons of
codecs you want to watch the output of the current HA listening test:
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=39448

If you search HA you will also find previous results. Lame encoded mp3
come out supprisingly well (given that aac is a newer codec), but there
have been issues with some VBR modes causing stuttering on iPods as the
cpu speed does not pick up fast enough.

Previous listening tests have suggested the apple AAC codec is best if
you go for AAC. I did manage to import flacs into itunes AAC using
Foobar's command line encoder with a utility called iTunesEncode -
search HA for this. Essentially this method requires Foobar to
decompress the flac to a temporary wav, and then it drives iTunes to
import it. Foobar will do this for an entire playlist though so given
enough time it works but requires you to transcode all files and the
use iTunes to download them, rather than transcode on the fly. [I
ended up buying a portable which does flac so don't do this now]
