if you really want to know, ask on http://hydrogenaudio.org/
they have quite a few knowledgeable people on that forum that
know a lot about the ripping process, which is ridiculously more
complicated than it should be due to the CDDA design and sloppy
drive manufacturers.

around there the tool of choice is EAC and I've never heard of
WMP being recommended or even if it can do secure ripping at all.
as was mentioned before most drives cache and/or lie about errors
and it takes a lot software gymnastics to get around that, and
so far EAC is the only program known to do it (and maybe
plextools if you have a plextor drive that's supported).

but if you don't really want to know and whatever you are doing
now sounds fine to you, there's probably no need to change.
