I'm in the process of going through my collection and getting accurate
tag information. My collection is more track-oriented than
album-oriented because I don't often include complete albums, even by
my favorite artists. I am concentrating on having accurate GENRE
(including multiple genres when applicable) and YEAR tags.

The YEAR tag is most problematic, since I don't want the year the CD
was released, I want the year the song was originally recorded by that
performer. Some songs by some performers appear on 50 or 60 different
CDs. Also, if you have a boxed set or greatest hits CD, it may have
been released in 1995 but contains tracks released in many different
years.

In the end what I want is to be able to browse by YEAR and have every
track actually recorded in that year.

*****************************

It would be great to have a really accurate database based on a
verifiable ID like the MusicBrainz ID - that way you'd know you had the
exact same track as the one in the database. We could then submit
extremely accurate info including composer(s), performer(s),
soloist(s), album year, track year, possibly even a range of genres and
sub-genres to choose from. Album reviews, lyrics, album art in
different sizes, ReplayGain tags...just have a complete, accurate XML
page for each track. Then you could build apps that would let you
customize whet you wanted to pull off the page and into your own tags.

On tag fields that are subjective (GENRE), maybe we could have a voting
system - is that Steely Dan track Rock, Pop, Progressive Rock, or Light
Jazz? Maybe you could tell your tagging program to include any genre
that got more than 34% of the votes. That way, you'd get 1 or 2 good
genre tags but never 3. Lots of ways to use the data once you're
certain it's accurate.
