I'm using iTunes to extract/encode straight to Apple Lossless. I wasn't expecting it to be much faster, just a bit maybe, but I certainly wasn't expecting it to be x10 slower...
I have my original DVD ROM drive installed as well. I haven't tried it yet but I'd be amazed if it made much difference. Incidentially, the CDs I've tried have all been in perfect condition.
