There are portable MP3-player type devices that play FLAC, just not the iPod. FLAC was designed to be trivial to decode specificatlly for the portable player market.
The big downside is that FLAC files are big, and so use more flash memory, or worse, require more hard drive reads, which eat power.
If you search the forums, there was a guy who put his SqueezeBox in his car, with a headless Linux box under a seat. Very cool. Of course the natural extension is to have WiFi in your garage and have your car talk to your main house Slimserver so your car library is always fresh.
