I suspect id3v2.x was able to hold user defined tags but never find the
time to look at "how". Thanks snarly.

As this few last messages tends to prove, keeping your own track
information (all information you wish to see/add with just the level of
details you need/want) in a neutral place seems to be a good idea.

To go one step further, I'm currently writing a perl "framework" that
permits user to hold data in a xml file, the file is designed to hold
data from any data source (user defined, freedb, amazon, musicbrainz,
etc.) and "exporter plugins" permits to retag your whole library with a
single command from the xml. 
Exporter could be generic or user written (I plan to write a
configuration/declarative exporter in the future). If you look at my
posts you can find some more posts about the reason I'm working on
this.

Before working on this xml framework, I put all my personnal stuff in
MY-XXX tags and this was really handy!
