Sounds Exactly like how bad MicroSuck OS behaves. OS software making decisions without any user input. "Oh, we know what is best for you because after all, people that use our products can not be trusted to make the correct decision". BTW, whenever MS makes a suggestion but still gives one a choice of two options, if it is not common sense always pick the one that MS is not recommending! One will end up correct or safe 9 out of 10 times. Back to your problem, verify that the driver is flagged as working correctly and the correct one. Next have the OS check the disk media for bad blocks and sectors because it sure sounds like there is bad media. Once all the bad sectors are identified, backup your data. Then do a defrag so that the remaining good data is moved to the now known good areas remaining on the drive. After doing this, in my opinion if it happens again, replace the drive. Yes I hate MicroSuck for ruining the PC market and killing all logical future development. So if one learns anything from this, put Linux on an old PC and give it a try. If one just has to have Word and Excel, switch to Open Office, which will convert the files so one can use them with the new programs which are FREE. Yes, I just typed the word FREE. The programs are free as are all updates.
