There is a guide to classical tagging in the wiki that may help
you. I have quite a lot of classical music and giving each opus
or "work" its own unique album tag has worked well for me.

Here's an example of what I use (id3v2 mp3 tags)

TPE1 (Lead performer(s)/Soloist(s)): Beach, Amy
TALB (Album/Movie/Show title): Piano Concerto In C Sharp Minor, Op. 45
(Nashville Symphony O feat. conductor: Kenneth Schermerhorn, piano:
Alan Feinberg)
COMM (Comments): ()[]: EAC 0.99pb4 / LAME v3.97 -V2 --vbr-new
--noreplaygain / mp3gain
TCON (Content type): Classical (32)
TYER (Year): 2003
TRCK (Track number/Position in set): 1
TPE3 (Conductor/performer refinement): Kenneth Schermerhorn
TCOM (Composer): Beach, Amy
TPE2 (Band/orchestra/accompaniment): Nashville Symphony O
TPUB (Publisher): Naxos
TXXX (User defined text information): (): 559139
TIT2 (Title/songname/content description): Allegro Moderato

I have over 2000 "albums" tagged this way and I haven't noticed
any slowness of the player or web interface.
