I use a balanced connection between the TP and my preamp. The TP volume is all the way up and I haven't modified the jumpers. So granted, the VU meters are for effect, but the volume of internet radio from the TP is annoyingly louder than the volume of FLAC or MP3 tracks.
MP3Gain is the only program I've found that allows the user to specify the target overall gain (e.g. 89dB by default, or something else I can choose). Do we in this forum know what MP3Gain does exactly and why the gain settings are always a multiple of 1.5dB? I seem to remember reading somewhere that it uses a different method of setting tags. There are tags on every "frame" of audio and the method that MP3Gain uses will work with every player, but it is more disruptive to the files (but still reversible). Foobar2000 only adds the four new tags but only has an effect with players that look for those tags. Am I full of red beans here?
