Try loading on 'as needed' bases. Dir after a dir at the time.

Now, for the updating lag - is it happening again and again with the
same tracks, or it is like that only the first time the certain track
is updated. You probably can no know if you load your whole library at
the time.

I suggest you do the test. Rip a new album, store it in the separate
folder, change some tags - there might be some lag. Change some more
tags again and update tracks - no lag should be there. Reason it
behaves like that is that some ripping software stores initial tags at
incorrect places in the file, so mp3tag needs to read the whole file,
reorganize it and write it to the disk again. If this is a case I
suggest changing your ripping software.

To give you some performance idea, I use fairly old and weak PC. To
load 8000 tracks it takes about 5 minutes. Updates are instantaneous. I
load my whole library only in rare occasions if I'm reorganizing
everything or I need to sort by some tag to make sure I'm consistent in
my tagging.
