As I said with flac -8 I get VERY FAST encoding speed! Latest FLAC
versions has dramatic speed improvements.

One 74 min. CD is usually encoded in about 1 minute or less. 
Is it really so much asked? CD Ripping itself takes A LOT longer.

And why not use some space savings if encoding takes so little time?
