Would there be anything wrong with that? I think that I'd prefer this to either the release date or the recording date of a particular recording (though the latter is of some interest to me too). Apart from anything else, this lets me browse a composer's works chronologically (though I suppose it's easy to guess which came first, the 3rd symphony or the 4th, it's not so easy to tell whether the 8th quartet came between them.) Pretty much the same as seeing a group's albums in chronological order (give or take a Best Of or two). As it happens, the earliest date I have in my library at present is 1911 (Stravinsky's Petruchka).
