Nice sum up of the problems Swimmer. I do use tags. But basically, when ripping classical music you have to do the tagging yourself. Sometimes the stuff that comes up with dbPowerAmp (that is used in RipNas I think) is a nice starting point, but you have to device your own system. The pages in the Wiki referred to some posts back can be of help here.
One of the nicer things in SC is that you can tell SC to treat composers like artists. Generally, if you fill the composer tag with the composer and the artist with the performer, you have two ways to get at, say, Beethoven's piano sonatas: via the composer and via the performer. Consistency is almost impossible. My general scheme is that I have something like Beethoven -> Gilels -> Piano Sonatas. There will be all Beethoven's sonatas played by Gilels I have. The same for Kempff: Beethoven -> Kempff -> Piano Sonatas. But if you want to hear anything played by Gilels or Brendel, you can use Brendel as starting point. Of course, if you have different versions by the same composer and performer, you have to differentiate further (e.g. 'Mahler -> Symphonies -> Abbado -> first cycle' and 'Mahler -> Symphonies -> Abbado -> second cycle'). This is just the general principle. Some collections are so large, you have to divide them. Suppose you have all the cantatas of Bach played by Ton Koopman. Treating these as one album would make things intolerably slow. So you have to divide them in 'packets', e.g. cantatas 1-5, etc. I think everyone uses his own system. The important thing is to device a system that works for you and makes it possible to find the things you want to hear fast. Finally, I advise MP3Tag as tag editor. A bit difficult to start with, but once on the way a very good tagging program (a pity COMPOSER is only in the extended tags).
