I’ve always opted for being able to "carry around" the (small)
cover image -inside- the file. This gives me additional abilities, like
storing the original single covers besides the album cover on some "One
Hit Wonder" collections and the like.
I’ve never seen any drawbacks, except if using unreasonably large
covers (mine are just 160x160px @ 72dpi, for display on a broadcasting
web page). Still, I -do- keep additional hi-res album covers (mostly
front, sometimes back) in the album’s folder, just in case I ever
wanted to print those or check something (like label code, year of
issue, or UPC).
Keeping the covers -inside- the audio files’ tags is also quite
convenient if you store tracks from compilation ("Various Artists")
albums not together in one, but in -different folders- (like maybe
under the track artists’ folders). Where would you store a
"folder.jpg" in this case?
