I really like your approach to having just one set of files, but using an encoding that can grab lots of bandwidth when the entropy of the program material demands it. So, again if the low-mem branch of the reference vorbis decoder inside the SB3 can't keep up, you really should consider server-side decoding, IMO. On the other hand, your investigations are very interesting and so I would urge you to continue post any new findings here.
