Yeah, you're right - I was ripping to Apple lossless.

I've now given up on the idea. I found a CD which iTunes couldn't rip
properly. it was horribly clipped and distorted. I've decided to forget
my attempt to move over to iTunes. I'm going to keep my WMA VBR rips as
my primary library and just use iTunes to copy the stuff to the player.
I'll probably switch to WMA lossless for the future and perhaps
gradually migrate my existing CDs.

It means converting from lossy to lossy format but I'll only listen to
the player while walking around outside. My previous player was
downconverted to 128kb/s WMA and it didn't bother me. This time I can
keep a high bitrate but I suppose it depends on the result. Maybe a
downconvert would hide some defects.
