Your right looking at the XBMC wiki it looks as if it should recognise compilations without using the Album Artist field but in practice I've never been able to get XBMC to list compilations as single albums without setting album artist to various artists. However setting album artist to various artists doesnt seem to make much difference in slimserver so I'm pretty much there, I still have Various Artists both at the top of the artist list and also under V but thats not really a big deal.
BTW is there a way in mp3tag to search for the string "various artists" in all tags just so I can check it doesnt exist outside the albumartist field?
