In a 24-bit DAC, the LSB cannot be resolved accurately into audible audio. No available DAC can in practice resolve beyond 21 bits. Likewise, no available ADC can put anything but noise into the bottom 3 bits... This is why you see SNR specs of 120dB at best, not 144dB... I'm not surprised you can't hear a difference.
