I wouldn't take what WMP does (or doesn't do) as any kind of guideline. It is a law unto itself.
If I recall, this thread started with your rather weird and rare 20/48 file, which I suggested you should convert to a STANDARD 24/48 file by padding the 4 LSB's. I still don't understand why you haven't done that. Then you wouldn't have any problems.
