Hi guys, I was thinking of interfacing something like a DAB or satellite radio to a Squeezebox, and while I know this has been done before via direct connection of a receiver to an SBS machine, I would prefer to built an Ethernet-connected gadget that contains the ADCs or I2S interface and encoder software to make a somewhat more flexible arrangement (e.g., WinAmp or other media players could also connect to the streams on this gadget).
As far as as Squeezebox is concerned, as far as I can tell my device would effectively be an "Internet radio station." The preferred method for streaming those appears to be Shoutcast (MP3+embdded meta-tags) -- is that correct? I was wondering if there's perhaps a simpler streaming format that's supported... not only because I wasn't really looking forward to porting an MP3 encoder to an embedded system (for the gadget I was thinking something like a Beagleboard, so "apt-get install lame" doesn't quite cut it :-) ), but also because I'd like to avoid the quality degradation that occurs when you re-encode a compressed audio source (DAB uses MP3 compression; the satellite guys use iPAC... newer versions of both use AAC, apparently). So is there some simple streaming format such as, e.g., "PCM with embedded meta tags" that could work here? I've looked around the Wiki some, but it seems to primarily address file playback and all the fancy transcoding SBS can then do internally.
