It shouldn't be too hard to get around that somehow. Just keep another 
QPainter around just to set the font to it and extract the metrics from 
there.

I don't see how to do that without rewriting the KFontRequester widget.

It already does that. The font it displays by default is the "all purpose" KDE 
font as selected in KControl.

I doubt the "more intelligent guess" will be much smaller to implement than
