Yep, clearly any kind of symlink/reflink is a no-go, especially given the very
use case of `--build-in-place`.
Setting up an unprivileged OverlayFS mount would be the best in terms of
efficiency but I'm afraid that's out of scope for something like
`--build-in-place` (even if technically it's not too hard).
