Thanks for your answers (and Stuart and Victor too!) which make things a
lot clearer to me :-) But one thing still bothers me a bit: I am confused
about where I should go to have a fifo/IPC implementation that will last,
and that won't change its API too soon... Would it be too stupid an idea to
have IPC separated from the real time kernel(s), just as Comedi does it
for hardware device drivers? (In my opinion, IPC is ``just'' a device,
except that is available completely in software...)
Probably my confusion comes from the fact that real time for Linux is
still somewhat in its infancy, which means that APIs and features are still
being developed, change from time to time, and are generated in
several places independently. And because it so damned difficult to keep
documentation in sync with the code.
Without blaming someone: it remains difficult to follow all developments
(hoora by the way to everybody working so hard on all these developments!),
especially because there is no single place that really keeps _all_
information and documentation up to date :-(
I had hoped that www.realtimelinux.org would have been able to become this
single independent ``Point of Contact,'' but apparently it lacks the
manpower for this tremendous task... It still remains _very_ useful though,
but it's not perfect :-)
And that lack of an all encompassing single reference is a pity:
from the contacts I have in our spin-off companies (all working in the
field of control and automation) I notice that people want to know more
about the potential and the feaures of the real time Linux variants, but
they don't want to hunt on the web for a week. The about-to-be-published
book and a good HOWTO (does it exist already?) would do wonders here. I am
willing to cooperate on such a HOWTO; somebody volunteers to take the
initiative and the lead of such a thing?
