I suggest you uninstall the gems you mentioned and use acts_as_taggable_on
https://github.com/mbleigh/acts-as-taggable-on

If you have troubles making it work, post the errors and we'll see what we
can do to help
debug.  Sometimes, it's nice to try to do some things manually but in this
case, doing so
will just cost you time and effort.
