Since Kitty Litter generated so much discussion, I'll repeat some past info, bird grit makes great ballast, looks like crushed granite, does not have the kitty litter problems, and is very cheap if don't mind sifting out the larger chunks. Regarding real dirt, I use it for scenery the same way I use ground foam, works well. Ted Larson
