Jamie and my friends in S,

There is a better alternative! Being a bonsai enthusiast, we've gone through
the debate of using kitty litter (NO-NO-NO!!), oil dri (no-no-no!) and all
kinds of soil amendments to increase the water flow through out bonsai pots.
All of the items above are LOW-FIRED clay products and will break down (some
rather quickly) in the presence of water.

What you want is a HIGH-FIRED clay product, like the stuffed used to condition
atheletic fields. Several brands come to mind, Turf-Face MVP, Terra Green or
Mule Mix (depending on your locale). Here is the UpperRightCorner of
Louisiana, a 50-pound bag of TurfFace MVP costs about $12. I sieve the
material through a window screen and use what is captured by the screen in my
bonsai pots (usually 70% to 80%). The material that passes through the screen,
could be rinsed and kept for later use as ballast, gravel, etc. on my railroad.
It is light tan in color and I don't how it would die, but it does darken with
time in the bonsai pot. This stuff will NOT turn to mush!!!

There is a generic material, called haydite, that we also use. It is the
matrix used in casting cinder blocks and is grey.

ENJOY!

Keep in touch!

  Raleigh,
I've never tried it. I have a cat.
