Andy,
I agree with you for the most part. The Dispatch is a good magazine, and a
greater presence in RMC, MR etc. would do a great deal more than a separate
pub. I still think a handout of some sort would be good. Perhaps a periodical
is not so much needed as a single book. I've mentioned it before, but a
magazine format special publication like the "Guide to Modern O Scale"
published by Joe Giannovario should be doable. A one shot deal should be easy
to fill with interesting chapters relavent to todays model railroader. Now if
ever there was a project worthy of the NASG, this has to be it. This would
have to be strictly scale. Anyone interested should pick up a copy of this
book to get an idea what it's all about. I have one, and would be happy to
send more information to anyone interested. I'll send Joe an email to see if
he has any objections to posting some sample pages to see if I can generate
some interest in the project. I'm willing to do whatever I can to
help.

I have watched this thread with some interest. I recently acquired a
whole
stack of old S related magazines because the owner no longer wanted them.
(I can relate to the need to get rid of my old MR's and RMC's.) They are at
the school club. I did look through the S Gaugians from the last 20 years.
I found the early ads and reviews for Alco, Sunset, OMI, Southwind, River
Raisin, SHS and AM quite interesting in helping me see the growth and
departure of manufacturers in S. I learned what was available, when
available and original price. (It seems that the prices have not really
kept pace with inflation as far as most of the brass is concerned. This may
change as more people get into S;-))
I think that you are all correct in many aspects. S Gaugian has managed to
stay alive because of its formula. I am not saying that it is good or bad.
I don't subscribe to it because it does not suit my needs.
To be honest, I don't subscribe to any magazines any longer. I don't have
the room to store them and I can't keep track of photocopies of articles.
The only periodicals I get are from the SIG's that I belong to.
IMHO, S does not really need a scale magazine and I also believe that S
cannot really support a scale only magazine. I have looked at all the
attempts. They are nice but still don't compete with their generic
contemporaries and could not last because of finances. The continous
quantity of interesting articles is just not there. What S needs is a
little more presence in the big two. I have noticed an increase in S
presence over the years. So things are moving along.
IMHO, the Dispatch is excellent and where it's at in S.
Merry Christmas all, and to all a good night!
cheers,
