Jim, I now have about 10 multiple unit diesel sets with DCC or sound units done, including your recent Sharks. While this may not be a direct answer to your question, here goes. I decide that a given set of units will ALWAYS be run together. I program all the decoders to the lead unit number address. I write on the underside of the fuel tank in pencil the address and an arrow facing the direction of normally forward. Life is too short to deal with consisting a diesel lash up!
If a B unit has a small headlight front and back, I program it like the A units for rule 17 lighting. (Full brightness in forward and 1/2 brightness in reverse.) I could not leave a light like that not work. Jazzing lighting effects were the final push needed for me to do the DCC dive in head first. Of course any lighting on a real B unit would most likely be manual by a holster moving a single unit in a yard IMHO.
