Michael, I had the same question.  Would one position the couplers over a gap 
between blocks?  I never had blocks except on sidings on my previous DC 
layouts, so had to use the 5 finger method.  I'm loving the ability to make and 
break consists anywhere on the layout with DCC.

  This struck me as a funny juxtaposition. I'm not criticizing, it just
  seemed funny. So with analog DC, how does one couple two powered
  diesels "prototypically?" With DCC, you drive one locomotive up to the
  other until they couple. I don't recall a prototype for the 5 finger
  lift method of coupling two diesels with DC. Maybe you could use the
  one finger push, and say it represented winching?
