Bob,
Finally got to look at your website. Your pictures are really wonderful,
now if I can direct your attantion to the Central of Georgia, 4-8-4, 'Big
Apple' hauling the fast IC passenger train toward Miami over CofGa tracks from
Montgomery, Alabama to Albany, Georgia in the early 1950's.
Not many people know that the 'bigest little shortline' the Central of
Georgia in 1943 had a delivery of the same engines that both the SP and WP
obtained. SP's GS-6 came from the GS-2, they were not streamlined to save
steel for WWII.
When I was six I saw one blast through Columbus, Georgia with a string of
Illinois Central passenger car headed for Miami. It was nothing for these
engines to pass 80mph and keep accelerating!
Having lived previously in Sunny Vale, California and watched Southern
Pacific trains go to and from San Francisco, I was used to seeing big engines.
That size locomotive was rare in Georgia.

Does anyone know where I can find plans for Rio Grande's C-48 2-8-0's?
I was wondering how well the S Helper 2-8-0 mechanism would work in
converting the locomotive to the Rio Grande prototype. Anyone else
considering such a venture? It appears that the Rio Grande boiler
diameter is larger and rides lower on the frame than that on the S
Helper engine, but without plans I'm in the dark.
