Ben:

5674 & 5681 was a three engine project - I built and detailed three GP9s at the
same time. The third GP9, number 5717, was traded away.
These three engines were undecorated versions that I purchased on eBay over a
period of a few years. IIRC they came in two boxes - yellow and beige. I also
seem to recall that while the frames of each engine were the same, each had a
different type of motor and one had rubber hoses (or were they springs) in
place of universals. I also recall that the wheels had different bearings -
one engine had "D" bearings, another had circular, and I think there was a
third. Finally, I recall that the gear towers all looked the same but some had
bearing springs and different colored gears - some red, some white, and black.

I am pretty sure I had an early production model and late (or current)
production model in my collection so I saw the range of stuff AM used, but I do
not recall a different frame or different gear towers.

Of course it was over three years ago when I dissassembled the engines so my
recollection could very well be wrong. Also, since I am an S scale rookie,
there are much more qualified people on this list who could tell you the
production history of these models.

BTW, I was under the impression that the 395 motor is relatively new addition
to the American Models line.
