Amen to heat sinks. The large lead weight "seems to be doing a good job" of
heat dissipation. But, admitted the unit does not have much running time. It
seems best to raise the decoder up a bit in the crevice so the heat dissipates
from all sides as well. However the large lower tech motor does worry me.
Soundtraxx has stated to me that the max amperage is 2 "and a scootch". I did
two things to give myself some leeway. First I decreased the rear weight to
balance with the weight on the front drivers (or better said in the front
boiler and mechanism added together.) The excessive rear weight as delivered
was in my view putting all the weight on the rear, canceling the front, and
causing excessive motor draw and coupling wear. Secondly I did not wire the
tender light to the decoder as these were 12-14 volt 50-60 milliamp bulbs as
delivered. The front light was replaced with a 1.5 volt 15 milliamp bulb. I
have a DCC ammeter on order and will report amperage draw later. Based on DC
wiring the highest I reached was 0.6 amps.
Thank you
Chris
