I have done this fairly routinely for diesels using an NCE decoder to drive the
locomotive and a LokSound decoder for sound. I consider the NCE's
bullet-proof. At less than $20 bucks each, installation costs are low and
aren't a reason for consternation when you release the smoke from one. <GRIN>
I have had more challenges with two decoders in steam. Other than using a
switch on the sound cam, we have not been able to get the 'chuf' to work
properly or syncronize.
But listening to an A-B-B-A set of Sharks all fire up their prime movers at
varying times sure is cool... Stop by the DPV layout if you are in the Chicgo
area on a Saturday night and we'll show you.
Oh yeah, one other "trick" is to use different speakers in a consist to provide
a bit of variation for each unit's sound. My experience is modelers tend to do
everything the same once they have a system that works. Nothing wrong with
that, I just like to add variables as I think that more accurately portrays
what you might see and hear in the real world.
Come to think of it, that is something I would enjoy in a diesel decoder; a CV
setting for prime mover sounds that mimic brand new or needs rebuilding or old
and tired or about to spit out a piston... Imagine 3 SD40's pulling a train
all with slightly different but credible prime mover sounds... cool! By I
digress...
