Jonathan:
Generally that solution works very well, especially if you use Decoder Pro to
program your decoders.
At present, I am changing from a single Tsunami decoder set up to a two decoder
set up - the Tsunami is used for sound and lights and a Zimo is used for motor
control. My equipment has 4-digit road numbers and that 4-digit number is set
as the extended address. The motor decoder gets a short 2-diget address
consisting of the first two numbers of the 4-diget extended address, the sound
decoder is addressed for the last two digits of the extended address.
So if I was to fine tune engine 4449, using service mode programming I would
change the address of both decoders at the same time to the short 2-digit
address. If I wanted to make changes to the motor decoder, using ops mode
programming (so I can check the changes as the engine runs) I would call up
decoder address 44 and make the changes to the CVs of the motor decoder only.
Likewise, for changes to the sound, I would call up decoder 49 and make change
to that decoder only. Once I am done, back in service mode, I change the
address back to 4-digit.
Sound complicated, but it is very simple. I could have done this 15 times in
the amount of time it took to write this post. The pro is that no wires need
to be unplugged. The con is that it sometimes does not work and is near
impossible (at least for me) to do without Decoder Pro.
I still think dual decoders are PIA though and hope that Soundtraxx gets off
its butt and improves its motor control and increases the amperage in the
Tsunami.
