Hi Don --

Mid 30s, but it had nothing to do with eyesight and everything to do with
availability. PBL came out with their first Sn3 K-37 in ‘79/80 and I was
hooked instantly, having been disenchanted with the performance of my HOn3,
and not having enough room for On3. I traded HO/HOn3 at roughly three to
one for Sn3 and then the S standard gauge brass steam started to show up...
I am not a brass fanatic, but it is VERY hard to beat brass steam locos for
detail that doesn’t disintegrate, and they were light years better than
AF/AF conversions or kit brass – the only other option at the time, and I am
not a loco scratch builder! No SHS 2-8-0 or AM steam back then...

I have since “refined” my stable of locos, using previously acquired locos
to offset some of the cost of newer, more appropriate models. Gone are the
UP 4-6-6-4, 4-8-4, NYC 4-6-4, SP 4-8-4. I do a lot of mix and match of
loco and tender to give a more consistent “SLE&P look”. Would you believe
a NYC 2-8-2 tender behind an SP 2-10-2?

Have fun!

We recently had a poll re the average age of an "S"Scaler. Scale hopefully
was the operative word. Johns responce to Ed."K", got me thinking. I
wondered how old people were when they migrated to "S"Scale. Being from the
other side of the pond I may be barking up the wrong tree, but I was in my
mid 40s. I like to think it was a detail thing, but it could have
inadvertantly been a sight thing. One or two very good modelers over here in
their 40s & 50s expressed their delight at the level of detail. They also
comented on failing sight. Ex Ho-Ho'ers per chance !!!
