Although it doesn't count, I started with AF when I was 1. When I was in my
early 20's I started to get interested in narrow gauge and liked the size of
Sn3 so I built some Tomalco and RGM car kits and bought a Tomalco/PFM brass
C-16. (This was the in the pre-PBL days.) At this point I was almost purely
a narrow gauge modeler. In the early 1980's I was distracted by large scale
(G) narrow gauge, and even started an indoor layout. Luckily we decided to
more shortly after I started on the bench work. By this time I was in my
mid-30's, came to my senses, and designed an Sn3 layout that included a
standard gauge interchange. The interchange was really just scenery, and
that was the first section I built. The standard gauge was Code 100 rail
and I didn't have any scale rolling stock, just the AF from when I was a
child. I met Frank Titman at a local train show, joined the Lehigh Valley S
Gaugers and stated to accumulate some rolling stock. I'm still mostly
narrow gauge, but I have a standard gauge interchange and this time the
"broad gauge" trains can run.

In summary I would say; Sn3 - 20's, S scale - 30's, but I always liked the S
size. After I entered my 50's the large scale was reactivated in the form
of a modest garden railroad in the back yard, however, the main layout is
still my S/Sn3/Sn2 basement layout, and it's actually larger than the garden
layout.
