Mark,
I suspect there is no bad time nor good time to switch to S. There is always
going to be something not available that you wish for.
When I switched to S in 1969 you couldn't buy wheelsets for a while. The only
way you could buy trucks was without wheels.
Hang in there and be tenacious in your searches. S is looking for a few good
modelers.
