Mark, you knew the scale was dangerous when you enetered it...
The "Big Three" (AM,SHS and SSA) will get their China Syndrome settled
eventually. I don't think any of them want to close shop.
There's still modern stuff out there, if that's you pleasure. AM has a Railbox
type boxcar, modern tank car, PS covered hopper and 3 unit spine car set still
available. DesPlaines still has Evans, FMC & PS 50' box cars, coal porters and
ACF Center-flows in stock. Then, there's Iron Rail Models putting out
contemprary tank cars. SHS really didn't do modern, but some of their flat
cars would work and can be found on the secondary market.
Granted, these may not be up-to-the minute contemporary cars, but they can be
found.
Modern locomotives may be a problem, about the only one is the AM SD60,
although, Lionel/Flyer(yes, them) is threatening a contemporary diesel(SD70ACe,
perhaps?) w/scale wheel conversion in the next catalog.
