I can see both Bill's and Earl's thoughts being useful. Locally we've seen the number of S layouts diminish in number. Death and it's nearest neighbor, old age are taking their toll here. On the bright side we have more guys and gals in our club than ever before.
It's good to have visitors from other scales over for operations or the traditional NMRA tour type activities. Hooking them one at a time is certainly okay if you're the only fisherman out there. Sometimes going beyond that is a difficult road to follow. A few years ago we were approached to display our modules at a show in a neighboring city for a national collectors type convention. I did some basic numbers and they weren't pretty. Transporting modules in several vehicles was costly considering the distance, putting up several guys in cheap motels (not to mention the convention hotels) isn't cheap either and we needed to eat. I also assumed we would have to pay registration fees. So, the numbers were staggering to the point having to make the decision to turn it down. Despite the fact that we're a Texas group, none of us own any oil wells! It has to be up to the NASG and/or our group of manufacturers to promote to the masses by casting a big net. I was very proud of some of the manufacturers at the NMRA joint conventions in St. Paul, Vancouver, Or. and even way back to Pittsburgh, (I missed Valley Forge), but this last year was a little limp despite the number of S layouts. IMO, the RMC ads are a mixed bag mainly because I haven't heard from anybody in that ad grouping--do they have a way of tracking results? are they selling stuff? Has anybody switched to S because of the products offered there?
