Hello Michael….
The S Sig is gearing up to present S scale to the outside world of model railroaders. We have some work to do still before going public big time. Our emphasis is on explaining and educating the masses about S scale. To that extent, we are not particularly focused on speaking to the choir – namely existing S gauge/scale guys. With the help of Brooks Stover, Tom Hawley and Gaylord Gill, the S Sig provided handout materials to the NMRA convention in Michigan this past summer. We also arranged for handout materials to be included in the registration packages of every single attendee to the convention. And…..our web site upticked in hits as a result. Your email asks about Trainfest. I assume you are speaking of the Fall S Fest. Is this correct? I do not know anything about an event named Trainfest. Since speaking to the choir of existing S folks is not our primary focus, we do not plan to have tables or speakers at this event. When providing S scale handout materials, we do ask the local groups to insure these materials are handed out only to serious potential convertees and not to give them to young children, teenage girls and not to merely place them on a table for anyone to pick up. This stuff costs money and we want to make sure it is used wisely with focus. Get my drift? I should add that the Michigan club did a great job in this respect and even gave some materials to known S folks from other parts of the country to be taken back home and used for other local events of various kinds in several other locales. This kind of free distribution is very helpful since it saves on postage costs. At 43 cents for one stamp, nothing is cheap any more. And, one final thought, most all of our materials are designed to steer the reader toward our web site. Thus, they do not contain page after page of text and/or photos. They do however have a professional appearance and exhort folks to go look at the web site. We decided that spending money to duplicate what is already on the web site did not make a lot of sense.
