Yes, attending multiple conventions really runs up the expense. I am
already thinking about 2014.
I want to attend the NMRA National Convention in Cleveland for the clinics,
plus I know there are a lot of S guys there too.
I would also like to attend the NASG in Wisconsin a few days later. I
could even go by Amtrak from Cleveland to Milwaukee.
But with all the lodging costs, its probably going to be too expensive.
I will have to choose, and it will probably be in favor of the NMRA
clinics, depending on what DCC and signaling clinics I see listed prior to the
convention.

I'm fairly close to some of the 'deciders' in our regional NMRA
organization. They are faced with continual rising costs and poorer members.
They
are starting to think of having there annual convention in smaller cities
with less of a tourism factor. I think the Duluth Convention might come
close to such a situation, the Lone Star NMRA will be held in Beaumont, Texas
in the future (not large and not a great tourist--read $$--spot). The ATSF
modelers met in Temple, Texas--again a fairly small city. There is a
preserved station/museum, but the local government let them use the civic
facilities on the cheap just to get the additional revenue for the hotels and
food establishments.
If one were to attend a regional NMRA, perhaps a historical society
convention and then the NASG you're talking lots of dollars. I've had to fly
to
most of the conventions that I've attended and that has been a major
factor--somehow I attract the TSA guys with the rubber gloves, and my
equipment
is always extra charge--no thank you!
