Chris, Tim, anybody else... Um, I think the point has been missed. Firstly, anyone who's corresponded with me at all or seen my layouts, rolling stock etc. knows I am a tinplater/hirailer, not a scaler.
Unfortunately that's totally beside the point, along with all the interesting views given about toy train philosophy, rivet counting, speculation about Lionel Rage, and everything else. The allegation was made that Lionel's truck trailers are 1/64th scale which is an objective observation subject to objective measurement. I demonstrated that, based on their dimensions (not my modelling preferences), they are not. The may be close to 1/64th scale in some dimensions (not width), yes. But an object is either of a certain scale or it isn't. BTW, we're not dealing with "details" here. The width of highway trailers and railroad rolling stock is basic, the least varied dimension in the real world, and it's the most telling dimension on the kind of models we deal in. It's not a minor issue like rivets or other surface detail. Now, the width error in the Lionel trailer body may not bother you. If not, fine. No problem. But that doesn't make the trailers 1/64th scale. That's an issue of fact, not opinion. Besides, if the width error doesn't really bother you, why call the trailers "1/64th scale?" Why should the designation matter? Why confuse the issue with erroneous claims? And, I might ask, who's angry? (No, really.)I made a simple statement bearing on a simple issue. What's all this about "anger?" Why does any criticism of Lionel stirr up accusations of "getting emotional?"
