Yep, you're right.
I saw, that one of the last patches, that went into the official
Sage-4.1 release, was that one:

#6478: Nicolas M. ThiƩry: Make sage -combinat work without
touching .hgrc [Reviewed by Dan Drake]

Maybe it was this very problem that you ran into, and reported above.
