I think you need to remember that Sage is used in lots of countries. Asking a 
lawyer in one country might not be too useful if

* The code is used in a commercial company,
* university
* Hosted on a web site

etc etc

in another country.

I think common sense would indicate there may be future issues, if the range of 
applications of Sage (as in maths) gets too close to what the other Sage does. 
Given financial application packages are sold for both Mathematica and Matlab, 
Mathematica includes some inbuilt financial things, it suggests to me that 
someone might try to write a financial application for Sage. Then things could 
start being difficult.
