or maybe he has become more skilled as a drummer?
i have known several drummers, each at various stages of experience. the guy
who had been playing only for a short time threw in lots of fills and rolls
and whatnot every chance he could get - the bigger and better approach which
supposedly makes one seem to have more experience than one has. then there
is a guy i know now - he has been playing for 17 years. in all the times i
have seen him play, whether on his own or with a group, he has never done
any of the things that most people associate with "kick ass drumming" -
rolls, excessive fills, double bassing. nevertheless, the guy is fucking
amazing. in fact, i let him borrow HIFTBSO a while back; when he returned
it, the only comment he made was that the drummer was "fucking ape-shit
awesome".
in a nutshell, will is an incredible drummer - how can anyone say his work
on "days were golden" or "pillars" is the result of laziness? he has simply
honed his talent and has become a much better musician in the process.
i am only able to listen to "diary" every once in a long while because,
frankly, all the excessive show-offy drumming gets to be really annoying,
especially on "seven".
i think the best kind of drums are kind where you can sometimes forget
they're even there - modest mouse is a great example of that.
umm... well anyway... i am going to see the band in lawrence kansas sunday
night, so i will post a review of the show soon after that. i am pissed i
will have to see the show without owning the new album grrr
bye bye
