No Cisco and Colin aren't back together, Cisco was born in Portugal and
moved to UK when he was about 5 years of age he then finished school there
and started his music career there as well, currently resides in Portugal
with his family. He isn't claiming anything that's not true in this case,
just how he asks to be promoted that's all.

regardless it will still be a great show!

Cheers!

(313) Mixmode Records - Delano Smith's label

2004-09-02 Thread Scott K Ellis
Don't know if folks have gotten the 3 records on Mixmode yet. I just got #2
 #3 this week. Haven't gotten #1 yet. I think they're really excellent.
Delano's cut on #2, Back in the Day, is a cold KDJ-inspired disco-loop.
Tony Foster's #3 record has a spacey after-hours feel to it--but still some
funky *** house.

FW: (313) recent kdj stuff

2004-09-02 Thread Stoddard, Kamal

I disagree. when i heard the samples online, I was instantly struck by the
intricate interplay and meticulous leveling and layering of the samples from
that winans cut. I'm sure being familiar with the original helps loads because
I can tell where the cuts were made and how much knowledge of harmony and
melodic framework it took to make that track as deep as it is. also with the
b-side, this struck me more as an homage to Gil Scott and crew from concept to
execution. Maybe that's the whole deal with it being a private collection
(cause I'm sure it couldn't be cashola :D ). Meaning that he's aware that only
a select few will be able to relate to the aesthetic he's going for. dunno, I'm
probably wrong though. I rather liked the b-side as the spoken word bits are
s what I heard walking through any random street coming up round my way and
hence they strike a chord in me that most recent music doesn't. I understand
that most can't relate though, and it's probably a good thing. to relate to
that meant that you may have grown up around some seriously slang talking
brothas, plenty of fast shaking junkies and a whole lotta other undesirable
elements (by society-at-large's standards). but to me it speaks of home. it's
not just nostalgia though, it's really well executed in my opinion. I'm feeling
it.

(313) [UK Spam] /Locked - Sat 25th Sept 04

2004-09-02 Thread Martin Dust
The Sonic Church is open, as System 23 step out to break the silence to
support their forthcoming single One More Line. It's fitting that they
have selected to play at Locked in Manchester, these boys started the
same time as Dust and have always stuck to their guns, never running
with the pack - they are well respected at Dust Towers.

Peaktime clubbing moments are built on anonymity. Those fragments of
time when you're blown away by music that you just know you will never,
ever, be able to identify.

System 23 make that music. Tracks that lay waste to the dancefloor
because everything is a hook. There's earcandy everywhere, but the
overall effect is still minimal, still classy.  Yet it fulfils Dust
Science's aim of creating the ultimate techno knees up.

System 23 takes industrial's heritage of electronic inspiration and
squashes it into techno's blueprint. Influenced by like-minded
industrial inheritors Surgeon/Regis, and adding an overlay of Funk da
Void and Beyer, they use hard beats and savage filters to make music
that is dumb, yet smart. Lovely.

Behind System 23 is a long history in music, going back to punk and
industrial days. Their early influences include range from the Sex
Pistols to Kraftwerk, Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle. System
23s music clearly stacks up the Pistol's attitude against techno's
sonic arsenal. Even better, their deep knowledge of the industrial
greats means they know just how slammingly funky they could be, as
anyone who saw the Cabs live can tell you. It's this side of industrial
that seeps through System 23's grooves.

Seriously I'm not as young as I used to be and mostly limit myself to one

Now I'm going to spend the next month prevaricating which it'll be.

Should be easy but here's a clue ;) - if you fancy chilled out chin
stroking beats and some plink plonk keys - Metro Area. If you fancy
your face tearing off and your mind bending by the Jim Jones Ministers
ov thee Sonic Church with some Northern Electronic Soul - System 23.

Hope that helps ;)

Maybe because autumn appears to have come early here, I find
 myself in a
sort a mood for Kit Clayton stuff (just my own personal
 association.) Anyone
on here who isn't familiar with his stuff, I'd recommend you
 check it out.

Personally, I don't think I've ever heard a poor Kit Clayton
 track, and I
know I'm not the only own who thinks that whilst he's not
 from (or for ;-)
Detroit, his music has an edge with which people who like 'Detroit'
electronic music, can find an affinity. (For instance Juan
 Atkins used Belt
Frictional Problem some years back on a mix cd.)

His style seems primarily 'dubby' (dubby in a techno sense
 that is). But it
ranges from crystal clear, highly structured arrangements
 which (for me)
seem to put the intelligence back into 'IDM', to seriously
 browned-out,
blatantly toking delay-fests. (Did you know, for instance
 that a Kit Clayton
track holds the first ~scape catalogue number? It's sc 001 for 'Nek
 Purpalet'.

Happy discovering for anyone who hasn't yet.

Part 1 Moody. Do I use that word enough? Moody intro from Japan, an
early sulker from New Order, and Frankie Knuckles dubbed-out mix of
italo disco by Jago. Flows into moody pre-dawn loft house from Iken on
London's Real Soon imprint. Recent deep (dare I say moody) house on
local Tetrode label, and funked up synth-driven expressions from Daniel
Wang and recent Metro Area. New lush techno from Arne Weinberg
connects the mood to all-time Chicago classic from Virgo. In other
words: Feelin' Moody.

Part 2 dave plunges the mothership underwater with dub techno from
deepchord, and resurfaces in late-summer style with a coastal wash from
sensurreal. the hypnotic ebb continues with a collaboration between
chicago's josh werner baby pop, and a smooth ride from UR's andre
holland.

For those of you who have not listened to this already, the new album

sound a lot like Model 500 to me, really nice.

Also on the Puzzlebox tip: The Optic Nerve mix album by Das Closer is
enjoyable to for Keith Tucker fans. One of the members of AUX 88, Black

If you like Tucker his material you will enjoy this one as well.

Andrew

Robotnik was also at Oslo once, and Carl Craig was opening DJ (!)
UR DJ's have been there too. Rob Hood. etc. etc. There were Prince
afterparties, etc. etc.Basically 313 is not the go-to list for
detroit parties/happenings, (it kind of never was.) There are so many
amazing nights and parties that are going off, many of them small but
still high quality, that the list rarely hears about.. i wish people
who live around detroit would post more about these. But basically
because 313 is subbed to by a majority of non-detroiters, and infact
probably a majority of non-US subscribers. This is not a bad thing,
just stating a fact. (not trying to start any kind of value judgment
thing here about where people live, so don't go there :). There's
way more posted about detroit artists and DJs playing in UK/Europe than
there is in detroit, except for during Movement weekend.

There's either not that many subscribers left on 313 who still live
in/around detroit, or they don't go out, or -- they DO go out but just
don't do write-ups for the list about their experiences every time.
Or some combination of the above... oh well

all i'm saying is just because it's not reported to 313 does not mean
that cool underground gigs aren't jumpin off here and there and
everywhere :) I would have loved to hear more about the recent gigs
at Oslo too... it's a great space downstairs adn well-suited to that
type of event and music, and right there on Woodward. Detroit is lucky
to have it, now let's hope they get enough people through the door to
support it.

Remember just like any other city, there are mega-trance commercial
clubs up and down that same strip in detroit now, ugh.

peace
