Delhi University waives fees for disabled students

(DU) has decided to waive fees and hostel charges for people with
physical disabilities from this academic year. They will also get a
  50% mess subsidy.

It has been decided that students with physical disabilities enrolled
in the faculties, departments, centres and institutions/colleges of DU
will be exempted from payment of fees, excluding admission fee,
subscription towards Delhi University Students' Union and the identity
  card fee.

"The other university fees include library fees, health centre fees,
sports fees and university development fund fees. The university has
also issued a circular to all the deans of faculties, heads of
departments, principals of colleges and directors of centres to refund
the fees already paid by these students for the academic session
2012-13 at the earliest," said deputy registrar (academic) Ram Dutt.

This year, around 500 students with disabilities have enrolled in
various undergraduate courses, the highest so far, although 1,500
undergraduate seats are reserved for them at DU. The decision is
likely to benefit around 2,000 students at various undergraduate and
postgraduate levels, including MPhil and PhD.

TOI on August 28 first reported about DU planning a series of
initiatives for physically disabled students. These included free
transport, subsidized housing and provision of assistive devices to
help students in their higher studies.

"All physically-handicapped category students who are residents of
different hostels/halls of the university will also be exempted from
payment of all fees and charges, except the refundable caution fees.
Moreover, the university shall pay 50% of the mess fees as well," said
  Dutt.

Re: [AI] perceiving or anticipating visual signs

2012-09-14 Thread zoher kheriwala

A very nice discussion,

If you are in to some formal communications like meeting or group discussion
then you can say "may I share something or can I focus on this issue?"
before you start speaking.

If you are in to informal communication like with friends then make some
sensational start to your talk so everyone listens to you very carefully.
You can use the words like "you know what happened that day! Or a very funny
incidence happened yesterday!" then everyone will be interested to listen
you.

If sum one tries to address you without taking your name or without
informing you, if you are knowing that person then even you miss reply then
also he will not mind or you need not have to feel ocword. But some unknown
person if you feel calling you then just ignore it. If he has some serious
business with you then he will approach to you personally

I know this triks can be used in particular conditions and can not solve all
the issues.

I completely agree with what Rajesh Sir said.
It often happens that we're unable to communicate with people who are
at some distance from us.
One major reason for this is that we cannot even know if the other
person is even listening to us or not.

I also try to laugh it off if I can. Although I won't pretend that it
doesn't sometimes land you in really awkward situations.
Another different, but related, problem is that we always have to
depend uponthe other person to start the conversation.
This can be interpreted as rude behaviour by the uninitiated.

Cheers,
Rahul

Good discussion going on.
I would just say that sometimes it happens that a totally blind person is
unable to directly talk to somebody just beyond audible distance, even if
that somebody happens to be your wife at a small distance because you
cannot
direct your behaviour specifically at a person or just gaze at her, walk
down and find her and so on.
I mean to say we tend to loose direct line of communication at will which
sighted persons take for granted.

I know I have not been able to makemyself clear to many of you.
But those who have followed my point and have perhaps undergone the
experiemce would appreciate my concern.

Any remedies, please?

Subject: [AI] perceiving or anticipating visual signs

Dear Mohit,

Query raised by you is very pertinent to VI community. In fact all of us
face this kind of issues on day to day basis. My views in this regard
are:

  1. All my friends and colleagues do take good care of me. They often
take
my name before addressing me. Normally when I feel that one to one
conversation with me is over I tend to look down indicating that eye
contact
is over. In case somebody wants to address a point to me then the person
addresses me explicitly by calling my name. It may be noted that eye
contact
is very important for one to one conversion and the sighted person shall
definitely call you or hint you in case he / she feels that eye to eye
contact is not there.
  2. During group interactions many a times it happens that more than
one
people are talking and group may or may not be hearing to all. so
whether

other person is listening or not does not really matter.
  3. On one of two occasions my friends have gesture me by pressing my
hand
that I should stop speaking.

My advise is don't think too much about such issues.

Vivek Singhal,

Re: [AI] perceiving or anticipating visual signs

2012-09-14 Thread Rahul Bajaj
I completely agree with what Rajesh Sir said.
It often happens that we're unable to communicate with people who are
at some distance from us.
One major reason for this is that we cannot even know if the other
person is even listening to us or not.

I also try to laugh it off if I can. Although I won't pretend that it
doesn't sometimes land you in really awkward situations.
Another different, but related, problem is that we always have to
depend uponthe other person to start the conversation.
This can be interpreted as rude behaviour by the uninitiated.

Cheers,
Rahul

Re: [AI] perceiving or anticipating visual signs

2012-09-14 Thread Ajay Minocha
Hi,
After a long sielence on this subject, I have some experience to
shair. It happened with me just today. One of my friends has recently
met with an accident. I went to his house to see him with some of my
female friends in their car. P.s, It didn't make me uncomfortable at
all. Any ways coming to the point, When we got down stares one of my
friends was trying very hard to unpark her car. But it was beyond her
efforts. So she quickly stepped out and some guy unparked the car for
us. I was talking to someone elce so didn't notice that she has
stepped out. As soon as car was in front of me I yelled loudly"areh
vah!!! kya bat? madam ko bhi car chalani aati hai? aakhir nikal hi
lee??" then everybuddy bursted out in laughter because of that stupid
fumble. I too didn't miss this opportunity and just laughed aloud with
them. These stupid mistakes don't make me uncomfortable, but give a
chance to any untimely and natural humour. So don't pay that much
attention to them. Soon your friends will not only co oprate with you,
But will tease you like they did today with me for very long. And
everybuddy knows, teasing is an unseprable part of good friendship. So
happy fumbeling from my side. ☺ ☺ ☺

 Hi folks,

I would like to ask you all how you guys deal with this blindism.
A blindism, of course, is a thing blind people do.

So, due to lack of visual communication, it is often difficult for us
to determine whether someone is talking to us or not if they forget to
 take our name.
This recently happened with me and I was left ashen-faced and felt
 really awkward about it.
What do you guys do when you don't know if someone's talking to you or
 not?

One more thing, sometimes it's also difficult to determine if a person
is listening to you or not.
This is mainly because they may nod or do other visual things to show
that they're listening, but we can't perceive that.

So, what's the most graceful and dignified way of dealing with such
 situations?

 Controversially yours,
 Mohit

Re: [AI] Need JAWS script for SPSS software

2012-09-14 Thread Sathiyaprakash Ramdoss
 Dear Abhishek,

Earlier, when all of my classmates were using V16 and V17, I was
using V12 of SPSS and I did get the task done. Still, I had lots of
accessibility issues. Say for instance, JAWS read 13 as 4. Since we
were provided with ready-made datasets, many of the accessibility
issues did not bother me at all. There are some good people in our AI
list who can extend their helping hand in this issue, and if they come
across your email, they will respond. If not, please contact me off
the list and I am happy to provide their contact info. Thank you.

Sathiyaprakash.

Subject: [AI] My Broadband connection gets disconnected

Dear Friends,

Recently I got my PC reformatted. After the process, there is a newly
arised problem. After using the internet for some time, say about for
fifteen minutes, it gets disconnected on its own. Thereafter I am unable
to reconnect it as well. The BSNL icon on the desktop doesn't get clicked.
Once I got the message: Your connection is timed out. What can I do now?
How can I rectify the problem? Please throw some light on the issue.

You can use Webvisum with Firefox, because Salona was the only captcha

Re: [AI] perceiving or anticipating visual signs

2012-09-14 Thread Preeti Monga
You could develop a code sound that is not easy to copy for others for your
wife/husband/ kids and so on. Like a wisel or a stylish cough or a word
which will be recognized by the person you are calling, something that
others will not note as odd and the sound will carry far. Or else these days
you can just call on the mobile phone.

See if that helps. I just yell!

Good discussion going on.
I would just say that sometimes it happens that a totally blind person is
unable to directly talk to somebody just beyond audible distance, even if
that somebody happens to be your wife at a small distance because you cannot
direct your behaviour specifically at a person or just gaze at her, walk
down and find her and so on.
I mean to say we tend to loose direct line of communication at will which
sighted persons take for granted.

I know I have not been able to makemyself clear to many of you.
But those who have followed my point and have perhaps undergone the
experiemce would appreciate my concern.

Any remedies, please?

Dear Mohit,

Query raised by you is very pertinent to VI community. In fact all of us
face this kind of issues on day to day basis. My views in this regard are:

  1. All my friends and colleagues do take good care of me. They often take
my name before addressing me. Normally when I feel that one to one
conversation with me is over I tend to look down indicating that eye contact
is over. In case somebody wants to address a point to me then the person
addresses me explicitly by calling my name. It may be noted that eye contact
is very important for one to one conversion and the sighted person shall
definitely call you or hint you in case he / she feels that eye to eye
contact is not there.
  2. During group interactions many a times it happens that more than one
people are talking and group may or may not be hearing to all. so whether
other person is listening or not does not really matter.
  3. On one of two occasions my friends have gesture me by pressing my hand
that I should stop speaking.

My advise is don't think too much about such issues.

Vivek Singhal,

Re: [AI] perceiving or anticipating visual signs

2012-09-14 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Good discussion going on.
I would just say that sometimes it happens that a totally blind person is
unable to directly talk to somebody just beyond audible distance, even if that
somebody happens to be your wife at a small distance because you cannot direct
your behaviour specifically at a person or just gaze at her, walk down and find
her and so on.
I mean to say we tend to loose direct line of communication at will which
sighted persons take for granted.

I know I have not been able to makemyself clear to many of you.
But those who have followed my point and have perhaps undergone the experiemce
would appreciate my concern.

Any remedies, please?

Dear Mohit,

Query raised by you is very pertinent to VI community. In fact all of us face
this kind of issues on day to day basis. My views in this regard are:

  1. All my friends and colleagues do take good care of me. They often take my
name before addressing me. Normally when I feel that one to one conversation
with me is over I tend to look down indicating that eye contact is over. In
case somebody wants to address a point to me then the person addresses me
explicitly by calling my name. It may be noted that eye contact is very
important for one to one conversion and the sighted person shall definitely
call you or hint you in case he / she feels that eye to eye contact is not
there.

[AI] My Broadband connection gets disconnected

2012-09-14 Thread ashikhirani
Dear Friends,

Recently I got my PC reformatted. After the process, there is a newly arised
problem. After using the internet for some time, say about for fifteen minutes,
it gets disconnected on its own. Thereafter I am unable to reconnect it as
well. The BSNL icon on the desktop doesn't get clicked. Once I got the message:
Your connection is timed out. What can I do now? How can I rectify the problem?
Please throw some light on the issue.
