Re: [AI] Youtube Downloader

2013-05-04 Thread Sneha nair
Hi, greetings.

True, YTD is not completely accessible.
Since you have used the previous versions of YTD, I hope you know that
you have to copy the URL and paste it in order to download any video.
After pasting the URL in the provided edit box, use the tab key to
find the "download" button.
The download will begin, though JAWS will not announce the progress of
the process.
Hope this helps...

With regards,
Sneha.

Dear list,

Would appreciate if you could please send me off the list the details of
such institutions/ examination conducting bodies who continue to defy the
new scribe guidelines of the Ministry of Social Justice. I am sure many of
you would be appearing for different exams such as UGC, UPSC, SSC, CBSE,
Universities etc. If their guidelines are discriminatory, please send me a
copy of these off the list on priority.

Thank you in anticipation.

Re: [AI] How to reply to a particular message on Accessindia?

2013-05-04 Thread Amar Jain
All right Mr. Pahuja, now your question is clear to me. So, what you
are essentially asking is that when you receive the digest email (one
email which is bundle of many emails), in that email, the topic list
which starts from '1.', and goes on for a specified size of the
message, in that your message is at all times on a different number,
and thus you feel that your message is not in the order it should have
been.

To reframe what I said just now, if a discussion is going on about a
particular topic, and there are 3 messages in that email, and one is
followed by other, and then the 4th message is about some other topic,
and 5th one is yours. According to you, that should have been on the
4th serial number, and not on 5th.

Well, don't worry, it is something not in anyone's hand as the group
is being configured in such a way, that whosoever's message reaches
first, gets the message listed in the next email. So, if my this reply
reaches late, then this message will be the last one in the next
email, no matter even if yours was the first message in the next
email, because the minute I sent this email, by that time there are
emails in the middle, which get their place.

To simply make it clear, its on first come first serve basis. And
there is nothing you or I can do about it.

Hope it is clear now. Look forward to see your participation.

Regards,

[AI] Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System

2013-05-04 Thread David Richards
Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) is an innovative warning system
emitting the sound that's pleasant and perceptible to the human ear, while
alerting pedestrians for the nearby presence of "Silent vehicles". Dear all
Access Indians, I recently read an article on Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System
which is proving to be useful to European blind people in Belgium-based New
Europe Weekly news paper that compels me to share it with my fellow Access
Indians. The European Parliament adopted an amendment in the month of February
2013, requiring all the European car manufacturers to equip silent cars with
Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System as to avoid endangering people with sight loss
that are not able to either see or hear such Silent vehicles. Electric and
hybrid or so-called Silent cars are too quiet for pedestrians to detect, those
cars especially pose bigger problems to blind people on the roads in European
countries. Those individuals are unable to hear or see such dangerous vehicles,
a fact that might result in accidents. In particular, the crash rate of Silent
vehicles is twice as high as that of cars with internal combustion engine in
slow speed manoeuvre conditions such as slowing down, stopping, backing up and
entering in parking space. For these reasons, members of European Parliament
are promoting the use of AVAS in order to reduce accidents. The European Blind
Union (EBU) president Wolfgang Angermann has welcomed the decision and stated,
blind and partially-sighted people have rights to be out on the streets here. I
expect the minimum noise level of cars to ensure the safety of blind people
that's paramount. I'm happy to see that European Parliament has listened to our
voice, we demand all member states to do the same and make endeavour to commit
themselves for all important requirements, he added. I personally think, in
India, no such legislation is required, chiefly because the country like India
have a daunting task to tackle the menace of deafening noise pollution that
contributes to the increase in the number of disabled people.
Warm regards.

[AI] AI magazine

2013-05-04 Thread Avichal Bhatnagar
Dear Moderator and all list members,
I have an idea regarding AI.
Can we start a monthly magazine of accessindia?
In that, all members can contribute articles related to problems
suffered by visually impaired and other handicap people, their
political/spiritual/social views and information related to access
technology.
By doing this, we will have the following advantages:
1. We will be able to reach out to a wider section of the society,
throughout the world.
2. More and more people will become aware about the views held by VI
community about various issues.
3. There will be a strong possibility of bringing positive change by
raising our voice through the magazine.

These are just my suggestions, moderator sir should decide.
I request other AI members to please share their opinion on this topic.
Thanks,

Subject: Ten Common Habits That Damage The Kidneys

This article was originally posted at
http://www.stayinghealthyplus.com/2013/01/10-common-habits-that-damage-kidneys.html

Kidney disease is one of the costliest illnesses in the world and managing
kidney disease is very expensive. Each year, lots of people die of kidney
disease all over the world, and the number of people suffering from chronic
renal failure, and need dialysis or kidney transplantation to stay alive
keep increasing. Statistics have it that, worldwide, more than millions
patients are waiting for kidney transplants, but only a few thousands will
receive transplants because of shortage of suitable organ donors. Patients
usually felt surprised when they are diagnosed of Kidney Failure. Experts
have found the explanation from your daily life habits. Here are the top
habits which lead to your kidney failure:

1. Not emptying your bladder early: Maintaining a full bladder for a long
time is a quick way of causing bladder damage. That the urine stays in the
bladder for a long time can cause the bacteria breeding in urine to multiply
quickly. Once the urine refluxes back to ureter and kidneys, the bacteria
can result in kidney infections, then urinary tract infection, and then
nephritis, even Uremia. So, no matter how busy you are, remember to drink a
lot of water and urinate regularly. Once you form the habit of holding back
urine, it will ultimately damage your kidneys.

2. Not drinking enough water: The main functions of the kidneys are to
regulate erythrocyte balances and eliminate metabolic wastes in urine. If we
do not drink enough water, the blood will be concentrated and the blood flow
to the kidney will not be adequate, thus the function of eliminating toxins
in from blood will be impaired.

3. Taking too much salt: 95% sodium we consume through food is metabolized
by the kidneys. Exceeding the salt intake will make the kidneys work harder
to excrete the excess salt and can lead to decreased kidney function. This
excess sodium will cause water retention, causing edema. Edema usually
elevates blood pressure and increases the risk of developing kidney disease.
The daily salt intake should be controlled within 6g per day.

4. Not treating common infections quickly and properly: Common infections,
such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, common cold etc, usually triggers or
aggravates kidney damage. They do this by causing an acute attack of acute
glomerulonephritis or chronic nephritis. So, you will see that people who
get kidney disease for the first time or whose illness condition becomes
worse usually present in hospitals with a history of cold or sore throat. If
after having cold, symptoms like blood in urine, swelling, headache, nausea,
vomiting, fatigue, poor appetite appear, you should consult your doctor
immediately, to assess your kidney functions, and start treatment if
compromised.

5. Eating too much meat: Eating too much meat and protein can increase the
metabolic load of the kidney. For those suffering from proteinuria, meat
consumption too may aggravate protein leakage, worsening renal pathological
lesion. It is suggested that protein intake should be 0.8g/kg per day. This
means that a person with 50 kg should consume 40g of protein per day. Meat
consumption per day should be limited within 300g.

6. Not eating enough: This is equally as dangerous as eating too much, both
of them will lead damages to your digestive organs where is full of mucosal
tissues. Mucosal tissues relates closely to your immune system. This is why
many kidney failure patients are diagnosed with "autoimmune kidney damages".

7. Painkiller abuse: The use of analgesics for a prolonged duration may
reduce the flow blood and greatly affect kidney function. In addition,
patients with analgesic-induced renal failure are more likely to suffer from
bladder cancer. Use analgesics only when it's absolutely necessary, learn to
rest instead of taking to the bottles. If you have been on pain killers for
a long term, it's about time you had a test to access you renal function
done.

8. Missing your drugs: Hypertension and diabetes have been shown to
precipitate or accelerate kidney damage, so if you are diagnosed as having
any of these disease don't live your life in denial, USE YOUR DRUGS. This
will ultimately help control your condition while also helping to preserve
your kidneys.

9. Drinking too much alcohol: Drinking alcohol without limitation may cause
the deposition of uric acid in renal tubules, causing tubular obstruction
and increasing risks of kidney failure.

10. Not resting enough: In our society, hypertension as a severe threat to
life is largely due to stress. A common symptom

2013-05-04 Thread O. Aishwarya
Hey friends,
Do you know of, or belong to, any social networks exclusively for the
blind? If you do, can you please share?

Please note: I'm after social networks (like inclusive planet) not
mailing lists.

Re: [AI] does Traveling allowances given to VI person in JRF?

2013-05-04 Thread Umesha Economics
no Traveling allowance will be given. but you can claim the same in
contingent expenditures bill. VI scholars are given readers/escorts
allowance at the rate of Rs. 2000 per month.

Dear friend,

Did you try these keystrokes on an external keyboard? If the keystrokes are not
working on an external keyboard, check the "Quick set" of your laptop. If it is
turned on, turn it off. The problem must be resolved after this.

Re: [AI] strange problem in HP laptop

2013-05-04 Thread Ajay Minocha
Hi sir,
Try using it with NVDA. and if the same problem persists then,
The quick keys or hot keys need to be turned off from it's bios.
You will have to refer to it's user manual for bios settings and then
a sighted person will be asked to do so.

regards.

If you need the changed settings to be your default, just save the
settings in ddefault. Also, when you make the setting changes, go to
the scan settings, and adjust your scanner source as well.

Re: [AI] Problem on ICICI Bank site

2013-05-04 Thread mukesh jain
hello,
with jaws for activating mouse over links use insert plus control plus
enter key combination simultaneously. doing so, jaws will say text
change to line so and so. here press letter j to jump to the given
line and type the said number after erasing the already existed
number in this field and press enter. now you should be able to see
the options contained in this mouse over link just beneath to the
mouse over link.

i follow the same method while using my sbi net banking such as, on
payment and transfer tab, there are several options like inter bank
transfer, manage benificiary, third party transfer etc and sometimes
it doesn't work by pressing enter so i activate these links with above
key combination.

secondly, you can check your browser settings such as, in tools
menu\internet options\advance tab, check your settings such as, ssl
2.0 and ssl 3.0 is turn on. because once even i had to face similar
problem but doing so resolved my problem.

hope this might be of some use.
thanks,

Re: [AI] Disturbing problem in kurzweil due to laptop's camera

2013-05-04 Thread O. Aishwarya
Hi,
There's a way to save your settings in Kurzweil. When you start the
program, it loads with the default settings. Go to the settings menu
and make all the necessary changes. When the dialog box closes, go to
the settings menu again and press enter on save settings. Enter a file
name in the dialog box which appears, then press entre without
changing anything else. When you start Kurzweil again, go to settings
menu and click on load settings file. From the list that appears,
choose the file name of your settings file. Your earlier settings will
load again.
Hope this helps.

[AI] Disturbing problem in kurzweil due to laptop's camera

2013-05-04 Thread Mohib Anwar Rafel
Hi members I mostly use kurzweil for my study purposes. I have camera
installed on my laptop. As u might be aware that in kurzweil pressing
f9 key starts scanning. Therefore friends if i have not attached
scanner to my laptop and accedently i press f9 key, in that condition
kurzweil consider camera as the scanning source and the camera
automatically gets on and kurzweil crushes. After that i have to start
kurzweil again. It disturb me very much as i am doing some importent
work that is lost in between. Please do tell me any proper solution. I
have tried kurzweil to set in only image recognise mode, but when i
restart the kurzweil that setting automatically gets away and returns
to its old setting.

Congratulations to him.
But I've heard from undisclosed sources that He is legally blind and
have made it in general category. I don't know him so no further
comment.
and if I am right, there were 10 posts to be given to qualified blind
candidates, but alas, UPSC again reneged, and like previous times true
totally blind candidates will have to recourse to the Courts the
highest body at the table of governance.

Re: [AI] how to reply to a particular message on access india

2013-05-04 Thread Amit Pahuja
dear amar jain,
what i mean to say is, when i see a discussion going here on a particular
topic. that discussion goes on 1 below the other for example, couple of
days back people were discussing about Persian technologies so their
messages were 1 after the other in a single thread.
and when i reply to a message, that comes as a new message in the list so
it becomes difficult for the people to understand that what i am talking
and which message i have replied. i even tried to write the same subject as
earlier

Message-ID:

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

Dear Mr. Pahuja,

What do you imply when you say its coming as a new threat? Parden me,
unable to appreciate and understand your question with sufficient
clarity so as to answer it..

Hello

I wentt on to ICICI Bank site to transfer funds, but the link format
seems to have been changed.

It’s no more showing
“fund transfer”
As a link instead saying
“fund transfer mouse over”

Mouse over should get clicked, but it’s not working even with a jaws
cursor and double left click.

I also used web IE but to no avail.

Any way out please?

Thanks

[AI] Why Delhi University’s four-year degree is a good idea,By Chandrachur Singh

2013-05-04 Thread avinash shahi
I write this in dismay after reading Prof. Jayati Ghosh’s article in
The Hindu, “How to Destroy a University” (editorial page, April 29,
2013). Prof. Ghosh is a leading academic and her comments are valued
but the article appears to be based on hearsay and carries a whiff of
a campaign against the current administration of the University of
Delhi (DU).
http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-opinion/why-delhi-universitys-fouryear-degree-is-a-good-idea/article4682121.ece
DU has taken on the Herculean task of redesigning the pattern of
higher education. As a leading Indian university, it is duty bound to
do so. For years, the pattern of higher education in India has
remained unchanged. Revamping it to make it contemporary, robust,
inclusive, and broad-based is a necessity. But there has been
opposition to this from a set of teachers for who change and reforms
are welcome only if brought about by intellectuals and administrators
of a particular ideological commitment.

Prof. Ghosh believes that the subjects offered as part of foundation
courses serve no real purpose and questions the rationality of
“forcing these relatively basic courses on all students.” However, in
her zeal to criticise the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP),
she forgets there are other novel courses on the list. The subjects
offered at the foundation level convey the impression of a serious
attempt at broadening the base of learning, something much emphasised
in the Indian tradition. The poet Kabir wrote:

“Bada hua to kya hua, jaise ped khajoor

Panthi ko chaya nahee, fal lage ati door

(What is the point of the date palm’s height, it offers no shade and
its fruit are too far away.”)

In other words, what good is stature that is not helpful?

Making students learn different subjects at the foundation level is
like nurturing a tree with a big trunk, an attempt at broadening the
knowledge base, and making it encompass enough to benefit society as a
whole.

Another chance

Equally perplexing is her point that a student who has learnt
something at the school level would lose interest if it is taught
(though for a short while) again at the college level. On the
contrary, it is very likely that learning would be fun for those
students because of their familiarity with the subject. It may also
help in peer learning.

On the issue of some students who did not do a particular subject in
school and would be forced to do it in college, the four-year
programme provides them another chance and access to an alternative
pedagogy. Prof. Ghosh is concerned about the future of students who
exit the new programme after two years. But does she have any idea
about the future of those who drop out of DU now at the rate of 40-45
per cent? FYUP is a blessing to such students, as it will ensure that
they get a formal award when they leave, which could offer better and
more respectful living. There is no logic in forcing a student to
undergo a long-duration course against her/his interest. In fact, such
students often use this time to pursue other objectives. It is well
known that many PhD students use their research period to attempt the
civil services examinations three or four times. Do we want a
university to be an institution of rigid structures in which a student
can either become a graduate or nothing? Or do we want it to be
accommodative of students from diverse backgrounds, having something
for everyone, presenting possible outcomes even in worst-case
scenarios?

As far as recognition of a four-year degree is concerned, it is well
known that what DU does today, other universities in the country do
tomorrow.

Respect for statutory bodies and processes is of utmost concern and
being an insider, the current Vice-Chancellor would know this much
better than anyone else. In fact, never before has any Vice-Chancellor
reached out to the stakeholders as he has. The focus and special
attention being given to the Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board is
worth mentioning because the girls in the programme are from extremely
poor and weak backgrounds. Through his innovative practices, he has
found new and better ways of understanding and communicating with
students and teachers of this vast university that has between four
and five lakh students on its rolls. Decisions of such a huge
implication require both formal and informal consultations with the
stakeholders. Credit must be given to the university administration
for creating new channels of communication where none existed, aside
from the politically-fragmented Delhi University Teachers’
Association. The meeting of the teachers-in-charge, followed by
meetings with parents and students were the first of their kind. They
were held to map the mood of the stakeholders. Given the composition
of the statutory bodies such as the Academic Council and the Executive
Council, getting the scheme and courses approved would have been a
forgone conclusion. Yet the administration chose to converse with the
stakeholders,
