Hi y4all

I am installing TSM 4.2.1.9 on Win NT, I have a Dell PowerVault 128T

My problem is that when migrating from disk to tape I get this right away,
ANR0984I Process 28 for MIGRATION started in the BACKGROUND at 23:20:49.
ANR1000I Migration process 28 started for storage pool DISKPOOL. ANR1134W
Migration terminated for storage pool DISKPOOL - insufficient number of

MIGRATION running in the BACKGROUND completed with completion state FAILURE
at 23:20:49. ANR1002I Migration for storage pool DISKPOOL will be retried in
60 seconds. ANR1003I Migration retry delay ended; checking migration status
for storage pool DISKPOOL.

However im able to label and checkin volumes without any problems

I have changed the mount limit from drives to 2 (update dev ltoclass1
libr=lb0.0.0.2 devtype=lto mountlimit=2). That changed nothing

My feeling is that im overlooking somthing in the config of the library or
drives

I also have a newer version of firmware then the one tested with TSM.

Would changing OS4s do anything, go to W2K?

Best regards

Server Migration - AIX to HP

2002-03-04 Thread Smith, Bob

Thank you to those who have responded - perhaps a little clarification is
needed from me as to why we are doing this. Our customer has 8 very large
HP-UX boxes being backed up by a a small 3-year old IBM RS/6000 with IBM
3494 library and 3590E drives. The RS/6000 needs upgrading - memory, RAID
disk, Gigabit LAN, CPU speed etc. etc., so a new machine is the most
effective way. But they have a spare HP-UX box so have requested we use that
for TSM (it's got 8 CPUs, 8 Gb memory, EMC RAID disk etc. vs. 2 CPUs, 512 Mb
memory, SSA (non-RAID) disk on the RS/6000). Hence the plan to move from AIX
to HP. Yes I would prefer a shiny new RS/6000 but the customer doesn't see
the need to shell out when he has a very good spare box that supports TSM.

We will be taking the 3494 with us using the dual-SCSI interfaces to cable
both systems for the transitional period. So my question is how do we
achieve this? The options seem to be to install the same TSM patch level on
both processors and then

* Quiesce the AIX, empty and delete disk pool volumes, run a BACKUP DB
and then a RESTORE DB
* As above but shut down to do a DUMPDB and then a LOADDB.
* As above but do an UNLOADDB and then a LOADDB ( Database is 27 Gb,
43m versions - how long does this take?)
* Start the HP as new and empty, and allow the AIX service to expire
after 90 days. This we know will work but 3494 capacity becomes an issue.
Archive data would have to be exported and imported, though.

Export/Import of node data is not possible - we have 23 Tb of it and
customer doesn't expect an outage that long! IBM tell me export/import of
node data is the only supported method, which must imply 3590 tapes written
on the AIX system must be readable on the HP-UX system.

Anyone got any further thoughts?

Many thanks

Re: Server Migration - AIX to HP

2002-03-04 Thread Daniel Sparrman

Hi

Moving cross platforms shouldn't be this much problem.

We've moved between NT/2000 and AIX using backup/restore procedure. I've
also moved between completely different AIX machines using this procedure.
No problems there.

However, I don't know how large your database is. But, it shouldn't take
more than approx. 4-6 hours to do this procedure on your AIX/HP box.

I don't know who you have been talking to within IBM, but the db
backup/restore procedure should be supported by both Tivoli and IBM.
However, it can be that your IBM guys isn't that keen on moving to an HP
box.

Regarding 3590 cartridges, they should be readable on all platforms, as it
is TSM that writes the data, not the OS. All you have to have is the TSM DB
to read the tapes.

If you could share the 3494 between the AIX and the HP box, this procedure
would be easy to test. You can do a test installation of the TSM server on
the HP box, and then restore the database from the AIX box to the HP box
using dsmserv restore command.

Documentation about Mountpoints, the maxnummp parameter and parallel session handling

2002-03-04 Thread Beat Largo

We get often problems with db2 and oracle db backups being interrupted by
the API because the session was too long in a state of waiting for
mountpoints We took several measures like increasing the number of
mountpoints in the maxnummp parameter of the node definition
IBM recommends that you shouldn't define more mountpoints in the node
definition than you actually got Now we don't understand what exactly is
the meaning of mountpoints If a mountpoint is a tape drive than we could
define only 4 mountpoints because we got 4 drives for the primary storage
pool If we would have two clients we could define for each node 2
mountpoints in the maxnummp parameter But having approximatively 30
clients how many mountpoints in the maxnummp parameter should we define?
Also we found that the space reclamation process is mounting files on a
mountpoint giving sometimes the message 'Waiting for mountpoint(s)' Though
a mountpoint doesn't have to be a tape drive but can also be a file in the
temporary space reclamation disk pool
In consideration of all those facts we would really be interested in a
extensive documentation about the handling of mountpoints, the maxnummp
parameter and parallel sessions in the TSM environment
If anyone could help us we would be greatly thankful!

TDP for Exchange

How does an incremental backup for TDP for Exchange work? Since Tivoli does
not backup individual mailboxes as files but instead does a Directory and
Information Store backup, would a single message sent or received constitute
an Information store change, therefore resulting in a complete backup
instead of the selected Incremental backup? Or, is the TDP designed to
recognize only the changes and only backup those parts of the Information
Store that have changed with the possibility of a restore only if you have
at least one good Full backup?

I am only asking because we currently have 3 Exchange 5.5 servers with 40GB
average databases doing nightly full backups. Will going to a 6 day
Incremental 1 Full be beneficial with our current retention settings (as
follows)?

Versions Data Exist 30
Versions Data Deleted 0
Retain Extra Versions 30
Retain Only Versions30

Also, do these retention settings seem OK. I was not involved with Tivoli
when they were set and would value another opinion.

Re: TDP for Exchange

2002-03-04 Thread Remeta, Mark

Incremental backups, backup only data that has changed. Incremental backups
are done in sets. You need to start by doing a full backup, and then x
incrementals. I forget what the limit is but at a certain point you must do
another full and start a new set. When you do the restore, you start with
the full backup from that set and then how ever many incrementals you have.
The incrementals take less time to backup, but it takes longer to restore.
We do full backups daily. Our IS is only 28gb. If you use Tivoli TDP for
Exchange you would not loose your single instance storage if you do full's
or incrementals. The only time you loose single instance storage is if you
use a brick level backup program or a Microsoft utility like exmerge to
extract the individual mailbox information to personal folders. You did not
mention what version of the TDP you are using. If you are using v1.1, then
you should set versions data deleted and retain only version to 0. Version
data exist and Retain extra version doesn't matter. If you are using v1.1,
TSM expiration does not work on your IS backups. There is a command line
utility you must run called adsmautodelete I think. You specify on the
command line how many days to keep your backups. If you are using TDP v2.x I
would set your versions data exists to no limit an the retain extra versions
to how many days you want to keep your full backups for. The incremental
backups use unique names so they are governed by versions data deleted and
retain only version. I would set them to be longer than the settings for the
full backup, versions data exist and retain extra. Finally you should read
the help file or refer to the manual. There is a good section in it about
policy recommendations that will explain it better than I have here.

Thanks,
Mark

I'm new to TSM, but I'm wondering if someone can give me an estimate on how
long a DB reorg would run for.

The follow on question to this is that the documentation implies an Audit of
the DB would also be required. Does anyone have experience that this is
definite? Also, how long would an Audit take? My colleague who is the lead
for TSM says that IBM have not been able to give any indication, and we've
heard figures ranging from hours to weeks.

Re: TDP for Exchange

2002-03-04 Thread Daniel Sparrman

Hi

Your retention settings doesn't look ok.

You have a value of 0 when deleted. This means, TSM wont save any versions
if the file is deleted from primary disk.

And, saving 30 copies of each files will take a lot of space in your
library.

I'd guess settings retention periods can be done in many different ways.

I'd suggest something like this:

Versions exist: 5-7
Versions deleted: Nolimit (or at least 3-5)
Retain Extra: 30
Retain only: 60-90 days.

How does an incremental backup for TDP for Exchange work? Since Tivoli does
not backup individual mailboxes as files but instead does a Directory and
Information Store backup, would a single message sent or received
constitute
an Information store change, therefore resulting in a complete backup
instead of the selected Incremental backup?

Thanks to all,

I have been using TSM for approx one year and have never seen this message

The only change that I have made in the last week is that I set the

not start automatically. Not sure if this has any baring.

Either way, I'm interested to know where this process commes from and why
if any one knows.

Thanks very much

Re: Adsmtape and TSM 4.1

2002-03-04 Thread Prather, Wanda

Do you have a backup of your DB that is old enough to still have entries for
the archives?
If so, DONT LET THAT DB BACKUP EXPIRE!

I would try shutting down TSM, restoring the old DB, and doing an EXPORT of
that archive data.
Then I would restore the DB back to current, and IMPORT the archive data
again, specifying DATE=RELATIVE and a new policy domain with different
retention periods.

Im pretty sure that will work for backups, I've never tried it for
archives.
What do you think, gang? Would that work?

I've noted the existance of the adsmtape program and I really need a version
that will work for TSM 4.1 on AIX. Here's a mail I posted on sourceforge in
the adsmtape discussion:

Hi,

I've inherited a problem where some monthly archive data was tagged for 5
week retention rather than 7 years. Fortunately, this only affects 20% of
the montly archive. Each archive resides on one DLT4 tape so my offsite
tapes still contain the data even though the TSM database has expired the
entries for it. I know the tapes, I know the files, there are no spanned
files and the important files are too big to be aggregated. Tivoli wants
$US85k+ to give me a salvage solution. Is there any chance of a version of
adsmtape that will allow me to get my data back?

If anyone out there can give some advice it would be very much appreciated.

Re: DB reorg Audit

2002-03-04 Thread Daniel Sparrman

Hi

You don't have to do a audit to do a unload/load. However, if you have any
errors in your DB, an audit will be required.

And unload should take about 6-8 hours, depending on the HW you're running.
The load should take about equal time. So, count with about 12-16 hours.

What kind of RS/6000 are you running? We did a audit of a 22GB database
which was 87% full. The machine was a dual PowerPC machine with 1GB memory
and mirrored disks. The audit took about 9 hours.

OFF TOPIC: Oracle DB on ESS.

2002-03-04 Thread Ilja G. Coolen

Sorry for this off topic question, but i need a helping hand, and i know you

We are about to put some big Oracle instances on one of our ESS boxes, and
we are wondering what the best configuration is, because we are used to
split indexes and data, also log and rollback, and place them on separate
disks physically to get a better performance.
I know this is not required on an ESS box, but i'd like to know if there is
anyone of you who has gone through this before. If you have any reference i
could use, it would be greatly appreciated.

The main question is:
Continue splitting data/index/log/rollback/temp and place them on different
8packs, or go a completely different way and put it all together on one or
more 8packs?

Thanks in advance.

AW: DB reorg Audit

2002-03-04 Thread Luscombe John (HS)

Daniel,

Thanks for the prompt response. I'm pretty sure we do in fact have errors in
the DB, hence my suspicion of a required Audit.

Our machine has 2 Power3 375MHz processors with 1GB memory, I don't think
the disks are mirrored.

I assume your Audit was with the Fix=yes option, but did you have
Detail=yes, as this would seem to cause even more checking.

If we did an unload, then reload and started an audit, but for whatever
reason it ran too long, could we cancel the audit, then do the reload again,
after redefining the DB and Logs? If this (or other method) is feasible then
it might just allay any fears of starting an audit without knowing exactly
how long it's going to take.

Thanks for your help.

Re: OFF TOPIC: Oracle DB on ESS.

2002-03-04 Thread Anderson F. Nobre

Hi,

As many host adapters, ranks, clusters you can use better is your
performance. If you really need throughtput you should consider to implement
RAID 0 throught LVM. For example, lets supose that you gonna create an
Oracle instance about 400GB and you have four ranks available to you. More
you gonna create separate filesystems to datafiles, redo logs, index, and
tmp for your instance.
In the case for your redo logs supose that you have origlogA, origlogB,
mirrlogA, mirrlogB. For these filesystems, create one on each rank and to
rest create an LV stripped by four LUNs, each of different rank.
The size of stripe I've read that's better to use between 64KB and 128KB.
But was used 32KB because the size of registry was 32KB.
Remember, if use RAID 0 from LVM of AIX you loose some facilities like
reorvg for the LVs stripped and when the space of LUNs finishes you won't
increase the size of your LV. So you have to plan very well before to
implement.
If you want the facility of striping between LUNs but don't want the
limitations of RAID 0 implementation of AIX LVM. So you should change the
attribute interpolicy of your LVs to maximum. But you have to create your
VGs with PP size as little as possible. Try with -t and -B if you use AIX
4.3.3.
The I/O workload is not so smooth as RAID 0 but many cases it's good.

Anderson

Re: Documentation about Mountpoints, the maxnummp parameter and parallel session handling

Beat,

unfortunately it is upto us as TSM admins to manage our mountpoint
utilization. Thus, in the specific situation of clients backing-up straight
to tape, you have to coordinate the scheduling of clients going straight to
tape and control (defeat) automatic uses of tape during those periods.

Subject: Documentation about Mountpoints, the maxnummp parameter and
parallel session handling

We get often problems with db2 and oracle db backups being interrupted by
the API because the session was too long in a state of waiting for
mountpoints. We took several measures like increasing the number of
mountpoints in the maxnummp parameter of the node definition.
IBM recommends that you shouldn't define more mountpoints in the node
definition than you actually got. Now we don't understand what exactly is
the meaning of mountpoints. If a mountpoint is a tape drive than we could
define only 4 mountpoints because we got 4 drives for the primary storage
pool. If we would have two clients we could define for each node 2
mountpoints in the maxnummp parameter. But having approximatively 30
clients how many mountpoints in the maxnummp parameter should we define?
Also we found that the space reclamation process is mounting files on a
mountpoint giving sometimes the message 'Waiting for mountpoint(s)'.
Though
a mountpoint doesn't have to be a tape drive but can also be a file in the
 temporary space reclamation disk pool.
In consideration of all those facts we would really be interested in a
extensive documentation about the handling of mountpoints, the maxnummp
parameter and parallel sessions in the TSM environment.
If anyone could help us we would be greatly thankful!

Upgrade server from 4.1.3 to 4.2.x

2002-03-04 Thread PAC Brion Arnaud

Hi Gurus !

We plan to upgrade our Unix box (H80 aix 4.3.3) from TSM version 4.1.3
to the latest available version. I already have the V 4.2.1 CD, and
corresponding manual, but the explanations provided for upgrading are
not very clear to me. Could anyone post a step by step procedure, that
would reduce the risk of destructing my lovely machine ?
I'm also wondering how long this process could take, and if it needs to
convert TSM Db to some slightly different format from the one we
curently own .
Last but not least, I read in the manual that Fiber channel protocol
definitions will be lost. Save existing FCP definitions before migrate
install ..., as we're using fiber channeling between server and
library, I suppose I'm concerned, but how do I save those FCP
definitions ?
Thanks in advance for any tips and hints !

Arnaud

Look at your dsmserv.dsk file in /opt/tivoli/tsm/server/bin. Is it correct?
Does it have an entry for at least one of your database or recovery volumes?
It only needs one 'cos the one db volume will tell it what the rest are.

Re: Server-side scripting: not supported?

2002-03-04 Thread Bill Boyer

Why do you consider this an 'oddly configured environment?' We use this all
the time. Our daily status report is generated from a shell script scheduled
via client command. We use a client command to run our AutoVault reports.
Our automated checkin script runs this way which does some Perl processing.

This provides us a single place for scheduling all our TSM-related tasks,
plus using the Q EV command we can atleast see if the schedule ran or not.

Then why don't you just create a client schedule in TSM with
ACTION=COMMAND
pointing to your shell script that you would normally execute via cron??
Now
TSM is handling your scheduling for you.

This has been bugging me for a long time as well since it means I have to
use cron to automate the TSM daily processing rather than TSM's own
scheduler for administrative commands. I'd rather schedule TSM daily
processing inside TSM to make it easier for customers to see everything
TSM
related from inside the TSM administrative client.

The security issue is bunk. Other IBM products can access the O.S. just
 fine (like DB2).

This is more of a security issue than anything. If you allow TSM to
spawn
scripts, the child process inherits the same security. Which is
typically
root. In their glory, they simply said no rather than opening up the OS
I
guess. They definitely are not explaining themselves well.

[W]as that the

that the run-time of the entire script.

Since we do not support scripts, I need to verify
that this problem is not your script. Try running
each command in your script manually.

The specific instance was a storagepool backup that was still running

tape to tape; the drives are on separate, dedicated SCSI adapters.

   TSM Server is Win2k,
   TSM version 4.2.1.0,

TSM does not support scripting. I assumed at one point that meant the

definition of scripting since in unix everything runs from a shell more
or
  less, with an
exec() system call, and with some tty and enviroment restrictions
applied.
No, just sh, ksh, and csh (the standard shells) from the command line.

It doesn't say much for TSM that they cannot even state what their
command
runtime environment should be, and that they impose arbitrary
restrictions
  on their command usage instead.

Hi TSM folks,

We are running TSM V4 R2 L1.9 on an RS6K with AIX 4.2.1.9, the DB is 17,900
MB and is about 76% full. The machine is a 2 processor WinterHawk (I think).

TIA

Re: TSM 4.2.1.9 on Win NT, insufficient number of mount points

2002-03-04 Thread Bill Boyer

I noticed from a previous post that the drives are showing up as GENERICTAPE
and not LTO. Did you create an LTO deviceclass? This could be the problem.
There are no LTO devices in your library. Make sure that the TSM SCSI driver
(ADSMSCSI) is controlling the autochanger and drives and not using the
Windows drivers that came with the library. Even though the device
information screen in the TSM Driver section of the MMC plugin is showing as
LTO, TSM is recognizing them as GENERICTAPE. I also had to get a patch of
the ADSMSCSI driver from TSM level-2 to make these work on a PowerVault 136T
library. Maybe this 'fix' is in the 4.2.1.11 patch level. There is a table
in the TSM Administrators Guide about choosing either the TSM SCSI driver or
native drivers. Unless you're using RSM, and I see you're NT so that's out,
the only library that has native drivers is the IBM3494 with Magstar drives.
Just about everything else should be controlled by the TSM SCSI driver.

Give that a shot. Delete your drives from TSM and change the TSM Driver
properties to control the library and drives. You should now have the
MTx.x.x.x device names.

And also remember this is just my $.02 worth...

Re: ADSM/TSM and INFORMIX online Backups

2002-03-04 Thread George Lesho

Well, If you are not having issues with the XBSA library and only with
management classes, use only a management class with an archive copy group.
The backups will be of the type archive. Set you retention up when
building the copy group for the archive. There is no point in making backup
type copy groups. The stuff will expire per your retention value in the
archive copy group. I need to keep my database backups for a period for
two of my 3 Informix databases... here is my copy group:

tsm: AFCOPS2q co satdomain active 32day type=a f=d

Policy Domain Name: SATDOMAIN
   Policy Set Name: ACTIVE
   Mgmt Class Name: 32DAY
   Copy Group Name: STANDARD
   Copy Group Type: Archive
Retain Version: 32
Copy Serialization: Shared Static
Copy Frequency: CMD
 Copy Mode: Absolute

Hi George

We are currently using the X/OPEN api to backup the Informix database.
We are also using the onbar utility in conjunction with the X/OPEN api.
My question is how to set up management classes for the backups and also
the
logs and how to expire these backups and logs.

Thks
Sean

Need more info Sean. In order for Onbar to play with TSM, a shared
library
is needed. Tivoli previously gave you one in ADSM Ver 3.1 but dropped
the
shared library for later distributions when it found it could sell a
stand
alone product (thus put some more coins in their pocket) called TDM for
Informix which is basically a shared XBSA library. Informix does have
one
available that they got gratis from Legatto some time ago but it doesn't
work well. The only other 3rd party product that provides a shared
library
is BMC SQL BackTrack for Informix which also allows you to pull database
tables from the TSM backup tapes and stick them in a warm database (nice
feature). My location uses SQL BackTrack for Informix. How do you plan
on
putting a shared library into use? The BMC product has you create
backup
pools which basically are the conduit to TSM by allowing you to bind a
management class to a backup (the backup pools have nothing to do with
actual tapes. I don't run onbar commands to do backups but use BMC
commands
which in turn call the onbar commands. I do all backups as TSM archive
type
because expiration doesn't work well with backup type backups. There
isn't a true incremental capability withing TSM against these data bases
anyway. There is an incremental capability within onbar (L0, L1, L2) but
TSM doesn't care about this aspect of Onbar. Read the Onbar Backup and
Restore Guide for your version of Informix and decide how you are going
to
come up with an XBSA shared library.
Don't hesitate to shoot further questions.

Hi

I would like to know if any has setup INFORMIX to backup to ADSM/TSM ?
My question is how did you set up the management class for the Informix
logical and physical
logs to be backed up to ADSM using the onbar function.
How does ADSM store the logs in the server ?
How to delete the logs when inactive from ADSM/TSM.

You can also try using the device drivers provided by the drive
manufacturer: IBM LTO or HP LTO drivers. I made a config similar to this
work using the native drivers rather than adsmscsi.

Look at your dsmserv.dsk file in /opt/tivoli/tsm/server/bin. Is it correct?
Does it have an entry for at least one of your database or recovery
volumes?
It only needs one 'cos the one db volume will tell it what the rest are.

Would changing OS4s do anything, go to W2K?

Re: TSM 4.2.1.9 on Win NT, insufficient number of mount points

2002-03-04 Thread Bill Mansfield

Well there's the problem. Your various tape devices classes are using
type LTO. Your Tape Drives are of type GENERICTAPE. You need for
your tape drives to be defined as LTO, or your tapes (which are in storage
pools of type LTO) won't have anyplace to mount. Like Steffan said, you need to
remove your tape drive definitions and diddle with your
drivers (and possibly tape drive firmware) until your drives come up as
type LTO. Then you should be set.

Re: occupancy by date

When you are deleting the backups you should get messages like:

1:47:27,COMMAND LINE : C:\PROGRA~1\IBM\ADSM\agentexc\excdsmc
/adsmautodelete:* /ifolder:35
/logfile:C:\PROGRA~1\IBM\ADSM\agentexc\excsfull.log

Status : Completed
02/28/2002 21:47:34,Results: 3 backup object(s) of 98 examined were deleted.

From the TDP GUI you can click on restore to see all backups that exist.

From TSM you could issue a query similar to :

SELECT NODE_NAME, HL_NAME, LL_NAME, BACKUP_DATE
FROM BACKUPS WHERE (NODE_NAME='EXCHANGESERVERNAME')

to see all backups on TSM for a particular exchange server.

With TDP 1.1 you need to define your Exchange Backup Copy Group with
verdeleted=0 for TSM to delete ojbects that have been deleted with TDP for
Exchange.

whatever that is. What I want is to have a rotating 4 week ,4 set of tapes,
config. Meaning that all data expires after 3 weeks. I'm not sure I have
that now. I do have the latest client and server versions though and see
what is the accurate view of THIS weeks tapes but do not see anything
available on the older tapes (2 weeks ago)

Re: OFF TOPIC: Oracle DB on ESS.

2002-03-04 Thread Davidson, Becky

What we did was put the indexes, data, log, and rollback in their own
filesystems. We then determined what were the hot datafiles and indexes.
From that we determined the disk sizes. We used 10.5 for our large
filesystems, 5.3 for medium size, and 1.5 for hot small. We then spread the
filesystems across as many arrays as possible trying to keep from putting 2
disks from the same filesystem on the same array if we could. We saw an
incredible boost in performance on writes and a good increase on reads. We
have discovered that when a filesystem becomes over 100 GB that we start to
have some I/O problems. I did a presentation on what we did at the Storage
Symposium and if you want could send you that presentation offline.

Sorry for this off topic question, but i need a helping hand, and i know you
are all the best in the storage business.

Re: Server Migration - AIX to HP

2002-03-04 Thread Thomas Denier

We will be taking the 3494 with us using the dual-SCSI interfaces to cable
both systems for the transitional period So my question is how do we
achieve this? The options seem to be to install the same TSM patch level on
 both processors and then
[Other options deleted]
 * Start the HP as new and empty, and allow the AIX service to expire
after 90 days This we know will work but 3494 capacity becomes an issue
Archive data would have to be exported and imported, though

The more recent TSM levels provide for setting up an overflow area for an
automated library That is, they provide a way of keeping track of tapes
ejected from the library and put on a manual rack This might address the
library capacity issue You would still have a temporary spike in the
demand for cartridges

TDP for Domino 1.1.1 experience

2002-03-04 Thread Scott, Brian

Hey gang,

I'm going to be rolling out a TSM solution for Lotus Notes Domino 5.0.9a and
will be utilizing the TDP product. I have a SunFire 880 backup server with
TSM 4.2.1.9 backing up the Domino client that will be the IBM x360 server
running Win2K and loaded with approximately 2500 users. The Domino data will
reside on a EMC Symmetrix connected via Connectrix and sent through an
Emulex clone FC card.

Could someone share some real life numbers like:

How many times a day you archive the Transaction Logs?
Has anyone experimented with the Buffers and Buffersize settings in the
Domdsm.cfg file?

If I could contact someone out there for some additional questions I would
greatly appreciate it!

LANFREE Backups - Feedback?

2002-03-04 Thread Denis L'Huillier

Hello,
We are currently evaluating the implementation of lanfree backups in our
environment.
I understand the conceptual benefits of sending data across the SAN vs. the
LAN/WAN but
am concerned with compatibility issues with our IBM TSM Environment and EMC
Connectrix Environment.
Has anybody implemented LANFREE in a similar environment?
Can anybody give some example or insight to real life advantages to
implementing LANFREE backups?
Are there any tape drive contention issues when a drive gets allocated to a
'LANFREE' backup?
How does TSM manage 'LANFREE' tapes? Does it dedicate a tape to a client
(like collocation) or will other
clients have access to write data to the same volser?
How about attaching a 3590 FC-AL to a EMC Connectrix Fabric?
Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Paul. Were keeping a years worth too! I don't know about occupancy by
date but when you run the adsmautodelete command, it outputs what it is
going to delete. We have the command run after the backup so if we just
check the log file, it lists what has been deleted if any. I know for us it
is working because I check the logfile periodically.

TDP for MS SQL version 2.2.1 is now available

2002-03-04 Thread David Groves

Attention Tivoli Data Protection for Microsoft SQL Server users!

PTF IP22467 Now Available
-
We have just made Tivoli Data Protection for Microsoft SQL Server
version 2.2.1 (PTF IP22467) available for download. The PTF contains
several APAR fixes and can be downloaded from the Tivoli web page
or from the ftp.software.ibm.com FTP site.

PTF IP22467 Details:

  FTP Site:ftp.software.ibm.com

  Directory:

storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/tivoli-data-protection/ntsql/v221

  The parts:

IP22467.EXE - Self extracting install file.
Download binary and run the EXE file
   to install the PTF.

IP22467.CD.EXE - Self extracting ZIP file of the PTF CD.
Download binary and run the EXE file
to extract the installation files into
the current directory. Then run SETUP
   to install the PTF.

IP22467.README.1ST - README file with PTF content information
   and installation instructions.

IP22467.README.FTP - README file with FTP instructions.

Here a summary of what the PTF contains:

- The prefix for error message codes in the Tivoli Data Protection
for Microsoft SQL Server Installation and User's Guide, SH26-4111,
has been changed to ACO. It was incorrectly shown as ANS.

- A bug was fixed which caused a query sql or any backup command
to fail if the SQL 7.0 sort order was case sensitive. This problem
affected both the command line and the gui and only pertained to
SQL Server 7.0 instances. SQL Server 2000 did not experience this
   problem.

- The command line parser was more permissive in the syntax it accepted
than had been stated in the documentation. The documentation has been
updated to reflect the syntax accepted by the parser.

- The Diff command keyword has been changed to Difffull since it
refers to the differential backup of a full (complete) database.

- The /Relocate option now works for transaction logs.

- Implicit transactions mode is now turned on explicitly within the
session established to perform the backup or restore. Previously
it was possible for implicit transactions mode to be off. This
caused a nested transaction to begin in some cases, which in turn
would cause the backup or restore to fail since the ODBC driver
provided with SQL Server does not support nested transactions.
This setting affects only the session established to do the backup
or restore. It will not interfere with other SQL Server sessions
in progress at the same time.

- A bug was fixed which had caused the gui to crash in some cases
if SQL Server authentication mode was specified in the
   configuration file.

- A bug was fixed which could cause data loss at the TSM Server if
the copy destination was changed between two successive
backups of the same SQL Server data.

- A gui bug was fixed which could cause a second partial restore of
a list of files and/or file groups to fail when a previous partial
restore of a different list of files and/or file groups from the
same database had been done immediately beforehand. The bug caused
the first list of files and/or file groups to be restored a second
time rather than the correct behavior, which would have been
to restore the second list of files and/or file groups instead.

- The following APARs have been handled:

   IC29808, IC29849, IC29906, IC30018, IC30561, IC30657, IC31372,
   and IC32236.

It is recommended that the IP22467.README.1ST file included with
the PTF be read first before an installation is attempted.

Dave Groves

how does TSM / sql backtrack use management classes?

2002-03-04 Thread Reichmuth, Michael R.

We're using SQL backtrack to backup our oracle database. If two backtrack
backup scripts are run using two different management classes against the
same database, (ie.. management class one has 3 version, 30 days and
management class two has 6 versions 60 days) how does TSM handle the backup?
Will it in effect use the shortest management class. Or will it keep two
sets of the database, one for 3/30 and the other for 6/60?

Date format manipulation.

2002-03-04 Thread PINNI, BALANAND (SBCSI)

 Hi Just shell script question.
I want to manipulate dates and get diff of two variables.
But result I want in hrs:min:sec.
Start_Time=`date +%H%M%S`
sleep 1 (Just for testing diff is 1)
End_Time=`date +%H%M%S`
TOTAL_Time=`echo $End_Time - $Start_Time|bc`
echo $TOTAL_Time

But result I want in hrs:min:sec I want to be very simple don't want to
use sed and awk.
Thanks

2002-03-04 Thread Þórður Aðalsteinsson

Thanx to all you guys that helped me with my problem. I took the easy way
and kept the generic drivers.

I just deleted the lto class and lto pool and created a generic pool and
generic class.

To make the story short it worked lika a charm.

Next time any of you come to Iceland drop me a line and I will buy you a
nice dinner

Well there's the problem. Your various tape devices classes are using
type LTO. Your Tape Drives are of type GENERICTAPE. You need for
your tape drives to be defined as LTO, or your tapes (which are in storage
pools of type LTO) won't have anyplace to mount. Like Steffan said, you
need to remove your tape drive definitions and diddle with your
drivers (and possibly tape drive firmware) until your drives come up as
type LTO. Then you should be set.

Unlock privilege

2002-03-04 Thread brian welsh

Hello,

In our company we have several units for different platforms, f.i. AIX, NT,
Sun and so on.

The units (platform-specialists) are doing there own restores and every
platform has one or more policy domains with different management classes.
We are using password access generate. So after password expiration the
platform-admins don't know the password for the client in case of restore a
machine from scratch, and have to contact our unit (Stor. Man). Sometimes
they type in a wrong password and node is locked. We want to use an admin
that can unlock the client-node and update the password in case of restores
so the platform-admins don't have to call our unit (storage Man.) and don't
loose time in case of quick install.

The manual is saying that admins with system privilege, and unrestricted and
restricted policy privilege can lock/unlock and update passwords. The
problem is that this is too much privilege.

I was wondering how other sites are dealing with this issue.

Thanks,

Brian.

Re: Unlock privilege

2002-03-04 Thread Prather, Wanda

The manual should say admins with system privilege OR unrestricted or
restricted policy privilege can do this.

If you give your platform specialists restricted policy privilege to one (or
more) domain, they can register, unregister, lock, unlock, and change
passwords for nodes in that domain only. They can't affect clients in the
OTHER policy domains.

I do this for several groups, for just the reasons you describe. Greatly
helps offload work from us system admins!

Prather,

We don't have any DB backups older than 7 days. They are only used for DR
purposes. I wish it was that simple.

Do you have a backup of your DB that is old enough to still have entries for
the archives? If so, DONT LET THAT DB BACKUP EXPIRE!

I would try shutting down TSM, restoring the old DB, and doing an EXPORT of
that archive data. Then I would restore the DB back to current, and IMPORT
the archive data again, specifying DATE=RELATIVE and a new policy domain
with different retention periods.

Im pretty sure that will work for backups, I've never tried it for
archives. What do you think, gang? Would that work?

Subject: Adsmtape and TSM 4.1

We are concerning filespace of 1,4 teras, the problem
is that the process has interrupted several times and

Exists some form to divide this process? It is
possible to begin from completes interruption?

Re: how does TSM / sql backtrack use management classes?

2002-03-04 Thread George Lesho

Not familiar with SQL BT for Oracle but I use (unfortunately) SQL BackTrack
for Informix. There is a $DTICATALOG directory (as database instance owner,
echo $DTICATALOG). Within the DTI Catalog directory, there is a file called
dtoptions. One stanza from this file shows how a BMQ SQ BT backup pool
is bound to a TSM management class
whether it is a backup or archive as well as the TSM filespace (remember
that the backup_pool=V35003DM is a
BMC reference:

begin backup_pool=V35003DM
  obsi=adsm
  dsmi_config=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin/dsm.opt
  mount-wait=y
  filespace=/V35003DM
  management_class=32day
  storage-pool=archive
end backup_pool

This is the line in the backup script where the BMC -to option points the
backup to a BMC backup_pool:

dtibackup -whole_system -quiet -noprompt -to V35003DM -debug -debugfile
/tmp/dbg.dmartbkup

and to add a bit more to this mess, there is an instance directory within
the $DTICATALOG path that contains the
default for any backups make by this instance user in case a -to option
is not specified. It contains defaults for
all dbspaces plus a default for logical logs. The name of the instance
directory is dbcci and there is another
instance directory called psinf_73uc1. In the case of an Informix database,
the place where the default BMC
backup_pool is set is called onbarconfig:

informix at afcprod1: /usr/bmc/IFX/data/dtcat $ ls
dbccidtoptionsdtseqpsinf_73uc1
informix at afcprod1: /usr/bmc/IFX/data/dtcat $ cd dbcci
informix at afcprod1: /usr/bmc/IFX/data/dtcat/dbcci $ ls
exportconfig exporthistory onbarconfigonbarhistory profile
schemahistory
informix at afcprod1: /usr/bmc/IFX/data/dtcat/dbcci $ more onbarconfig
begin object=@@default
  pool=V35003DM
end object
begin object=logical-log
  pool=V35003DM
end object

Hope all that mess helped... take this with a grain of salt as the BMC SQL
BT for Oracle product may work differently...

Question on STK 9360 library not working.

2002-03-04 Thread Hunley, Ike

We have a TSM 4.2.1.0 Server running on UNIX 4.3.3.0. It usually connects
to an STK 9360 library. The building powered down this weekend. The TSM
server rebooted. The Silo powered up. TSM issues these messages concerning
the tape library...

ANR8854E ACSAPI(acs_query_server) invocation failed,
status=STATUS_IPC_FAILURE. 03/04/02 14:33:03
ANR8852E Initialization failed for ACSLS library ACSLIB

We deleted two drives and tried to redefine them, but received a library not
available msg.
When I tried to make a change to the ACSLIB, I received a library busy msg.

We issued these commands to show both daemons running.
ps -ef|grep ssi
ps -ef|grep mini

We called STK and opened a PMR with IBM.

Per IBM we performed the following steps to no avail...

In dsmserv.opt: Made sure..ACSQUICKINIT YES

2. Halt TSM
3. kill.acs_ssi
4. Halt acsls
5. Wait 2-3 minutes
6. Restart acsls
7. Wait 2-3 minutes
8. rc.acs_ssi
9. Wait 2-3 minutes
10. Start TSM

Does anyone out there have any other methods to get past this?

3.1? Wow.

In the old days, if the client used compression and sent a file that was
already compressed, it might actually grow, exceeding the original estimate
the client provided the server. It can't allocate more space at that time
so the backup fails. To avoid this, ensure that the client is not
compressing the data (dsm.opt file compression no). Or exclude compressed
files (.zip, .jpg, etc.) The easiest thing is to stop compressing on the
client side.

2002-03-04 Thread David Longo

The ANR0534 mesages mean that the size of the file that node FASSNT is
attempting to send to the server is too big to fit in the storage pool available
space. (I assume that BACKUPPPOOL is a Disk storage pool.) You seem
to indicate that this is a new install. Do you know how much data (how big
the files are) that FASSNT has to backup?

Basically you must increase the size of the BACKUPPOOL to make room
for these files or adjust migration on this stg pool to free up space before
this node backs up data.

The ANR messages - not real sure on that. Do you get these
regularly or was this a one time thing? You may have just had too
many things going on at once on the server, this sometimes happens.
It's apparently related to Expiration running, I try to run this during a
time of day with little other activity going on.

This is a REAL old version of ADSM also!!

Re: how to identify ofsite tapes for specific node

2002-03-04 Thread Andrew Raibeck

You could try something like this:

select volume_name
   from volumes
   where volume_name in
   (select distinct volume_name
   from contents
   where node_name='STORMAN')
   and stgpool_name='COPYPOOL'
   and access='OFFSITE'

(This is one long command that I put
on multiple lines for readability.)

Notes:

- You will need to change COPYPOOL to whatever
  your offsite storage pool is.
- You will need to change STORMAN to whatever
node name you are interested in.
- The values in single quotes must be in upper
  case, as I have depicted.
- If the volumes in the volume name column wrap
(i.e. if the volume names are greater than 18
characters), you can extend the column width
  like this:

   select volume_name
  as VOLUME NAME
  from volumes
  ... etc.

Hope this helps,

Andy

hi guys,
please help me to identify offsite tapes belong to a specific node. i
have
a problem on my onsite tapes for specific node but i could not easily
identify which offsite tapes belong to that node from my offsite location.

Re: how does TSM / sql backtrack use management classes?

2002-03-04 Thread Rolf Meyer

Hello,

using SQL BackTrack, all retention management is done by SQL-BT acording to
definitions in the so called Oracatalog. Every backup object is unique,
because the name includes a timestamp. Versioning from TSM sight cannot be
established.

In the inst. guide of SQLBT-interface mode to TSM, called obsi.adsm, you find
the nessessary defs for the backup or archive copy groups.

Greetings

backup? Will it in effect use the shortest management class. Or will it
keep two sets of the database, one for 3/30 and the other for 6/60?

Tips for upgrading to latest server vesion ?

2002-03-04 Thread PAC Brion Arnaud

Hi Gurus !

We plan to upgrade our Unix box (H80 aix 4.3.3) from TSM version 4.1.3
to the latest available version. I already have the V 4.2.1 CD, and
corresponding manual, but the explanations provided for upgrading are
not very clear to me. Could anyone post a step by step procedure, that
would reduce the risk of destructing my lovely machine ?
I'm also wondering how long this process could take, and if it needs to
convert TSM Db to a different format from the one we curently own .

Arnaud
