There is quite some tooling around installset binary files which is parsing the current naming scheme (and also some differently organized older naming schemes also already) which would need to be adapted if we again change this. There is for example the cprelease script used by Program Management and the InstallationSets Web Application used by Sun Engineering and various automated tests like convwatch-test, performance-test, automation-catN-tests just to name some applications which would need to be changed. The naming scheme you are talking about is only used during the building of OOo and before publishing. After Installation-Sets have been made available via the OOo Website they are quite easy to identify as what they are because when uploading to the ftp server mirror network a different naming scheme is being used and they are also clearly described on the various download webpages etc. etc. On the other hand those who are building OOo should normally already know whether they are currently working on a developer snapshot or a release on a given milestone of some current OOo codeline. We have been using this scheme without complaints for a long time. It already did change a few times and our tools already have the burden to having to handle multiple naming schemes for the same files. For the getting it right at the first time part of your argument i think it is also unacceptable to require the tools and processes using these files to be able to handle not one but say 3 or maybe even 10 different formats just because somebody suddenly realizes after months or years of use that the currently used format may be not quite 100% to his/her taste. The problem is not to match on something in just one scheme like the -dev- mentioned by you but to change the used scheme multiple times and than requiring from the tools to be able to guess on which among a set of possible schemes for a given purpose actually was used by a concrete file. The possible benefit of such a change must be higher to the pain introduce by it. These files are usually very large 100MB. A lot of photos or graphics are used in the files. The broken files are not only unreadable for OpenOffice, the zipcontainer is broken and only zip-repair-tools can bring back a small range of the original content. We searched a long time without success for errors on our Novell-Network. We have finally found an indicative. A hidden step while writing files? We observed, that OpenOffice is saving files in two steps: The first step is shown by the blue “file saving” bar - Let me call it “preparing the file for storage” The second step is usually invisible - Let me call it „writing the file“. On a pc there is only a small time between closing the blue bar and writing the file to the hdd, you hardly notice it. If you have a slow network and a very large file, it will be measurable. Let me describe in an example: 1.The User is closing OpenOffice by the Windows X upper right 2. He says yes to “save changes” 3. The blue “file saving”-bar appears and ends 4 Now OpenOffice should close (remember step one - he used the Windows X). But OpenOffice seems frozen. After two or three click on the OpenOffice-Window., the windows taskmanager appears with the message “application is not responding“ and the user gets the dialog to cancel the program immediately. If he does, he will destroy the file, because now the file is written. Unbelievable? No, you can watch the writing with the file explorer! If the progress is watched in the fileexplorer (F5), then you see, that the filesize is not changing in step 3 . The file is changing in step 4 and you can see it grow step by step from 0 Byte to the original size. I stopped the time for a 100MB Impress file over one of our slow network connections: Step 3 22 seconds Step 4 50 seconds I stopped the time for a Writer 80MB file (some photos inside) over the same connections: I pushed die “Save-Button” after the safe bar ends, the writer was frozen (every button was gray, no coursor) for nearly 120 seconds. I stopped the time for a Impress 15MB file at a very critical location: Step 3 15 seconds Step 4 25 seconds (remember the file size 15MB!) Most of our user react like this: “I have saved my OpenOffice file (Step3) and now OpenOffice hangs. I can cancel the program, without any risk.” And thus, they destroy their files. I can reproduce this on Windows XP and Ubuntu. Most Impress-files were converted from powerpoint to OpenOffice. I have tested it on different fileservers. The worst result for step 4 was 150 seconds for 100MB. My Question 1. It is true, that the storage process (as described) consists of two steps? 2. If my description is correct, can we make a change to this process (e.g. Options-Menue)and reduce the time OpenOffice is blocked? 3. Any other good idea to keep the user from cancelling the process? This automatically will also include the XML Im/Export in svx/source/xml/xmltxtimp.cxx and svx/source/xml/xmltxtexp.cxx, this again will pull in symbols from svx/source/unoedit and svx/source/unodraw. The latter definitely contains a lot of stuff that shouldn't be included as it depends on the svdraw code. So it is clear that as a first step we have to clean up the uno mess. An obvious problem is the SvxItemPropertySet implementation. Deep inside it uses SdrObject::GetGlobalDrawObjectItemPool() and so binds itself to svdraw. If this implementation shall be shared between EditEngine and svdraw, we must first have a global item pool for the EditEngine and then initialize each SvxItemPropertySet with the pool it shall use. The first is easy as there already is a method to create an item pool for an EditEngine. We just miss a static instance of it that can be created on demand (like the global DrawObject item pool). The main thread calls sal3.dll's DllMain (DLL_PROCESS_DETACH), which calls rtl_cache_wsupdate_fini, which blocks in WaitForSingleObject on the m_update_thread. The m_update_thread has already returned from its rtl_cache_wsupdate_all function, but is blocked in some sysenter instruction. The MS Best Practices for Creating DLLs document (available from http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/driver/kernel/DLL_bestprac.mspx) states: You should never perform the following tasks from within DllMain: [...] Synchronize with other threads. This can cause a deadlock. A simple scenario in which the deadlock can be observed is the attached deadlock.patch, which in the sal code module creates and runs a small C application that dynamically loads and frees sal3.dll. (I stumbled over this problem in a similar scenario, where the DllPlugInTester_dll.exe that is part of CppUnit 1.12.1 dynamically loads and frees a test library that links against sal3.dll.)
